There are would-be Klingons picnicking in Germany; engineers at the Jet Propulsion Lab in Pasadena, Calif., trading one-liners from the show; and Hungarian enthusiasts meeting at a Kentucky Fried Chicken. This book is full of very useful insights into the effect Star Trek has had on humanity in the last 32 years. By reporting on Star Trek's impact on so many different cultures, Jeff Greenwald is following in Gene Roddenberry's footsteps. He is helping his readers see not just themselves, but the diversity that exists among Star Trek's fans world-wide.
Patrick Stewart is quoted in the book as saying how very valuable it is to be able to put yourself in someone else's shoes, to see their point of view (not just your own). If this book helps this happen for its readers, it will have served a very valuable purpose - not just providing a behind the scenes look at Star Trek, but a view of how people of other cultures see themselves as well.

The ultimate book on Star Trek Fandom

Jeff Greenwald observes and interviews various Star Trek authors, producers and TV Stars as well as Star Trek Fans all around the world. What is the result of that? The answer is: amazing! I can't remember having read anything like it before!
First of all, he has a very fluent, easy-to-read writing style. You just sit there, flip over one page after another and get sucked into the book. After ten pages, I was unable to put the book aside for anything else but work, food or sleep. But the book does not stop there. Jeff Greenwald has written a very thoughtful, very reflective book on the Star Trek Fandom. No matter which facet he meets - may it be authors, producers, stars or the common Trekker - he shows a insight about how Star Trek gives each personal dream and hope a shape.
Jeff tells us those stories of hopes and dreams - but always with a twinkle in his eyes, ready to catch remarks of people who may have hopes, but are as well capable to laugh about themselves.
Oh boy - I waited long for such a book!

The best overview of the worldwide Star Trek Phenomena!

In this unprecedented view of how and why Star Trek has captured the psyche of the entire world, Jeff Greenwald has gone where no author has gone before. He has taken an objective view of the Star Trek craze (making this book a must read for not only ST fans, but for everyone!) from the far east to America. With unprecedented access to the sound stages of ST First Contact and Paramount's Hart building (where the writers weave their magic), this book is a ST fan's dream come true. Only after reading Mr. Greenwald's "away missions" can people truly understand how a 35 year old American-made TV show can capture the minds and hearts of people all over the world. Interview with cultural icons such as the Dalai Lama, Kurt Vonnegut Jr., Arthur C. Clarke, Leonard Nimoy, Patrick Stewart, and others help make this book the superb creation that it is. Make sure to eat a good meal and have a long nap before attempting to read "Future Perfect," because once you p! ick it up you won't be able to do anything else until you finish it. Mr. Greenwald's clear and concise method of writing allows you to dive into the book, only to resurface once you have read it in its entirety. The only thing I didn't like about the book was that it ended. I could have easily read another 500 pages full of the author's amazing insights and sense of humor! Copywrite 1998.

Fun games but misprinted descriptive text.

The text has so many mistakes - lots of boxes where letters should be in the rules and descriptions of the puzzles. I'm going to have to look up rules on the internet for the Skyscraper puzzles because of this. I think the puzzles themselves are okay. These are fun games nonetheless. I especially like the Greater Than/Less Than puzzles.

About the Author

H. Lynn Erickson is an independent consultant assisting schools and districts nationally and internationally with curriculum design. From 1987 to 1994, she was the director of curriculum for the Federal Way Public Schools in Federal Way, Washington. She is a recognized presenter at national conferences, and is featured in the video "Creating Concept-Based Curriculum for Deep Understanding" (produced by the Video Journal) as well as in videos from the Association for Supervision and Curriculum Development. Her Corwin Press books include Stirring the Head, Heart, and Soul: Redefining Curriculum, Instruction, and Concept-Based Learning (3rd edition); Concept-Based Curriculum and Instruction for the Thinking Classroom; and Concept-Based Curriculum and Instruction: Teaching Beyond the Facts.

 

Lois Lanning, Ph. D., is an independent consultant and adjunct professor.She was a classroom teacher, K-12 reading consultant, special education teacher, elementary school principal, district curriculum director, adjunct professor, and finally, an assistant superintendent of schools for the last 12 years of her career in public schools.

Dr. Lanning is a certified Trainer-of-Trainers and Concept-based Curriculum Specialist with Dr. Lynn Erickson. She presents and works with districts at the international, national and state levels in the areas of literacy and concept-based curriculum design. Lois is the recipient of numerous awards and recognitions. In addition to writing professional articles and teacher resources, Lois is also the author of the bestselling book, Four Powerful Strategies for Struggling Readers Grades 3-8:  Small Group Instruction that Improves Comprehension, a joint publication between Corwin Press and the International Reading Association, c. 2009, Designing a Concept-based Curriculum in English Language Arts:  Meeting the Common Core with Intellectual Integrity, K-12. Concept bases learning

Focus on a framework for implementing concept bases units of study. Provides a clearly explained framework with numerous examples and tools. There is a long history supporting this model of teaching which the authors reference indirectly but seem to abandon in favor of presenting their model as revolutionary and uniquely innovative. This framework does not appear very inquiry oriented as it feels predominantly teacher directed rather than learner driven.

Good, practical book for FDM applied to PDE

This is a book that approximates the solution of parabolic, first order hyperbolic and systems of partial differential equations using standard finite difference schemes (FDM). The theory and practice of FDM is discussed in detail and numerous practical examples (heat equation, convection-diffusion) in one and two space variables are given. In particular, Alternating Direction Implicit (ADI) methods are the standard means of solving PDE in 2 and 3 dimensions.
In almost all cases model problems are taken in order to show how the schemes work for initial value problems, initial boundary value problem with Dirichlet and Neumann boundary conditions.
This book is a *must* for those in science, engineering and quantitative financial analysis. It digs into the nitty-gritty of mapping a PDE to a FDM scheme while taking nasty boundary conditions into consideration. The resulting algorithms are documented are are easily programmed in C++ or other language.
The book does not cover topics that are also important: operator splitting (Marchuk/Janenko), non-constant coefficient PDEs, nonlinearities. Finally, the book uses von Neumann analysis as a means of proving stability (getting a bit long in the tooth). There are more robust methods that use monotone schemes, M-matrices and the maximum principle. You should consult other specialised references.
This is Volume I of a two-volume set (Volume II deals with Conversation Laws and first-order hyperbolic as well as Elliptic problems.

Numerical Partial Differential Equations

Thomas wrote a good book on a quite specialized subject. Although finite difference schemes have been traditionally viewed as a game field for physicists, they are given today much more commercial attention as financial option market evolves. Those who seek standard numerical recipes are advised to read this book. You will enjoy it (easy reading) and learn. But the book may not satisfy quests of a more rigorous readership. It abuses the Fourier method in stability analysis while considering only PDEs with constant coefficients. The bibliographical work has not been done at all. In addition, the cover does not state that this is the first book of two. I'd also advise to read G.Marchuk "Methods of Numerical Mathematics" (Springer, 1982) where a more general approach for stability of numerical schemes is developed.

Good but has errors

I had to read chapter 5 of this book for part of the comprehensive examination towards my PhD program. It is pretty easy to follow, except most of the steps in deriving equations are skipped. At times, this may be confusing for the reader. I went through the steps on my own to make sure I understood how one equation led to the other. For the most part, if one knows the fundamentals of numerical methods, it's just writing down the steps to come to the same conclusion.

What bothered me most was HW.5.6.8 (and 5.6.9). Basically, the problem is wrong. Such boundary conditions and initial conditions for the PDE given in the problem is not possible. I thought I was doing things wrong, so I took the problem to couple professors and other students and the conclusion was that the boundary condition that is given for that problem and the one after it can not be satisfied. Also, the given initial condition can only be thought of in imagination and not through analytical solution to the actual PDE. My three different numerical solutions match perfectly, but not the assumed anaylical solution f(x-at). So, I took one star off - also for a typo/mistake I found when stability of explicit FTCS method was discussed.
