This is the excellent book for the self-test and quick score improving study before real exam. I read it 3 times before test and found out where is my weakness. It was very helpful for my exam. I even found many questions in NCCAOM exam were very similar like those in these book. They may copy some questions from these books

Errors, not helpful

This is a horrible prep book. I took three of the tests and found, upon review, that over 10% of the answers were wrong! I can't believe that the previous reviewers didn't catch this. Difficult to use for test taking and scoring. Many of the questions are as poorly worded as the actual NCCAOM test. In this way, it is helpful.

Inspiring stories of Motherhood

This book is so inspiring. Showing that not all pregnancies come at a good time, are expected or are wanted in the beginning. They also show the different decisions that the mothers made, including abortion or adoption, and the aftermath of each. I think any mother to be or a mother in general would love this book.

Being a Mother - Rich, Poor, Sick, Healthy, Anyone, Everyone

“New Life Within” is a compilation of short writings from a group of women with something in common – in this case, they are all mothers.

The authors have a lot of freedom to write about most any topic they choose. Some write about motherhood in general while others share specific stories or moments from their journeys. I’ve only ever come in to contact with one other book of this sort, which is why I shared my little story above. I think it’s a very unique style and it’s really fun and breezy to read. Each little story is quick and sweet and perfect to read in small bite-sized chunks. It would be a great book for reading on the go, in waiting rooms, or even as a toilet companion.

By the end of the book, I had read quite a few stories of mothers with invisible illness. Endometriosis came up three or four times, along with other chronic pain conditions. There were also enlightening stories about mothering through fatigue and depression. I very rarely come across testimonials about parenting with illness, and I’ve only read one blog that regularly shares on that subject. There’s no shortage of “mommy blogs” out there, and illness blogs are on the rise, but you don’t really see the two together very much. I was really glad to see some light shed on this topic, and I felt empowered to share stories of my own when I have them. Illness never automatically makes you a bad parent, and if you’re thinking of having kids but struggling with the idea of juggling illness and parenting, I encourage you to read this book and be inspired.

Now for the negatives. Yes, there are negatives, I’m sorry, but I’m a very critical reviewer. I’m the kind of person who could find fault in Shakespeare. I strongly believe in criticism as a positive thing in life, and I am by no means bent on flaming anything I review. Personal confession though: in college I once offered a ride to a guy in one of my poetry peer review classes, and he timidly accepted. We got to talking and he said he’ll never forget the first review he got from me. His exact words were “Whoa. She really hates me.” Oops. But we’re friends now, see? I’m just trying to help!

So my biggest problem with this book (and any book in this style, really) is that you’re reading work by non-writers. That can be a good thing and even a great thing! But I think inevitably you’ll start a story somewhere in here and just cringe through the whole thing. That comes down to style and personal taste, but in this particular case you’re all but guaranteed to have to plow through some writing you just don’t like. It’s just common sense that multiple authors means you get inconsistent pace and even reading level. That’s part of the reason I really prefer reading these things in small bits. Reading a ton of mini-stories all in different styles is tiring.

Another small note – the book opens with a forward which is good, because it can explain about how there’s multiple authors and the background of the book, but I did feel that it got a bit preachy. It made it pretty clear that this is an anti-abortion book, and if you’re thinking about getting an abortion then you need to read this and see how all these different people did what they did and so on. That’s fine, and I have nothing against creating such a resource, but I think you get that from the book without the forward.

Some of the stories are very “traditional,” in so far as they involved married people having planned children, but there are also a lot of stories that take place in the realm of single parenting and teen pregnancy. In fact, there are even a couple of instances of abortion! And those mothers express their sorrow and really talk about what a struggle it was and it’s clear that they aren’t advocating it.

Overall, the book has a strong positive message that everyone is a little scared when they first get pregnant because it’s a huge, scary, life-changing thing. It lets you know you’re not alone in your wavering faith in yourself as a mother and your fears about money and the future. Some stories show a lot of religious faith and growth while others show more growth in areas of self-acceptance and self-reliance. I like how eclectic this book is and I think it has something for everyone – but the intro sort of robs it of some of that intrinsic good. Seeing stats about abortion and talk about Christianity (note: I am a Christian and even I am turned off by this combo) right off the bat makes this book seem like a book you don’t want to read. There are a lot of such books – books you only read when you have to, and you never want to have to.

Basically, it seems like this is a book for someone considering an abortion – which I’m pretty sure is a position no one wants to be in no matter what your stance on the issue is. Now take me for example – I’m a young married Christian girl thinking of starting a family. If I pick up this cutesy wutesy baby book and read the intro, I’d think oops, wrong subject. I’m not thinking about having an abortion, I just want to read about motherhood. But this book is a wonderful overview of many voices on that topic! It is a book I’d want to read, but the intro made me think it wasn’t.

My point is that this is a really great read on motherhood, whether you’re thinking of starting a family, unexpectedly starting a family, or you have grandkids by now. Don’t let the intro scare you off! If it were me and I really wanted to include that kind of message, I’d put it at the end. Just a page or so with stats and some numbers to call for help. Then I would pick up the book, buy it, read it, and at the end go “Oh cool, resources, that was smart of them.” Nice and neat.

But that’s just my opinion. And really I don’t think book reviews are supposed to spend that much time talking about an introduction but hey, I’m new.

To sum up – this is a fun book to read. It’ll make you smile, it might make you tear up, and it’ll inspire you if you’re struggling with any kind of invisible illness. Plus it’ll make you go “awwwwwww.”

Great gift for any mom

Being a parent is hard work but completely worth it. Every parent (mom or dad) needs to be encouraged in their rolls. This book does just that for moms. Whether it's a soon-to-be mom struggling with whether they should have their child, or a mom who is just worn out and run down by the chaos that comes with the territory, the stories in this book will help fill them with hope and a desire to embrace the life that God has given them in the blessing of their child(ren).

Thank you Jillian and the rest of the authors in this book for creating a piece of art that will hopefully inspire thousands of mothers!

He is also the author of several book chapters. His articles have appeared in Management Science, Operations Research, and Interfaces Institute for Operations Research and Management Science, Naval Research Logistics John Wiley & Sons, the European Journal of Operations Research International Federation of Operations Research Societies and the AIIE Transactions.

Professor Taha was named a Senior Fulbright Scholar to Carlos III University, Madrid, Spain. He received an Alumni Award for excellence in research and The Nadine Baum Faculty Teaching Award, both from the University of Arkansas, and numerous other research and teaching awards from the College of Engineering, University of Arkansas. He is fluent in three languages and has held positions in Mexico and the Middle East.

An excellent book

I have used this book as a student some 20 years ago and continue to use it today in my line of work. I was surprised to read a CS student complaining that the book does not provide any LP theory. Huh! Apparently the reviewer did not go past the first two chapters because Chapter 7 gives all the necessary mathematical foundation for linear programming. The reviewer also talks about "signedness" difficulty in the book, something I don't understand because "signedness" is not a word in English. As for TORA, true the software is not an "orthodox" Windows development per se particularly for CS majors, but I find it refreshing that it is desigend to eliminate the need for a user manual. And this perhaps is the reason TORA is designed that way. It is very easy to use, and it can be used interactivly (with instant feedback) to help the reader understand the algorithmic details of the different OR techniques. I might also add that I used TORA's LP and IP modules many many times and have compared the results with those from AMPL and Excel Solver. Contrary to the CS reviewer claim,TORA always gave the correct answers. In summary, this book explains the basics of OR (theory, applications and computations)in a clear, concise, and straightforward manner using multitudes of examples. It is no wonder that it has been a leading textbook worldwide for over 35 years.

The Best Book, Period!

I just want to respond to the CS major from Denmark. If he/she is that knowlegeable about what OR should or should not include, what is he/she doing taking an introductory course in the subject? This is not a book about writing computer codes for algorithms to please CS majors. It is a book that offers a comprehensive treatment of all three aspects of operations research (theory, applications, and computations), and it does it admirably. Also, if the CS major has read past the first few chapters, he/she will find all the LP/IP theory he/she desires. I belive that TORA is one of the best tutorial programs I (and my students) have ever used. It is easy to use and it gives instant feedback to actions initiated by the user. Also, as far as I know, TORA always gives the correct answers. I am currently teaching an introductory class from Taha's book, and I am very pleased with it (not to mention that its page count is about half the size of the competition -- without loss of substance, I must add)

ref: PIRATE version of Taha's book!

I have learned the hard way that Taha's book is printed in two version: US edition and International Edition. Text material is exactly the same in both versions. Problem sections in the two editions are another story, in the sense that (1) the order of the problems is not the same and (2) the numeric data of most problems are not the same. The reason for this considerably aditional work (e.g., differnt solutions manuals and different solutions in the appendix) is simple: Deter the sale of international copies (usually much cheaper) in the US market. Having said that, the fact remians that Taha's book is one of the most oustanding references in the field.

Kirby Crow claims to write homoerotic romance. At least that's what her last four books purport to be. Angels of the Deep is not one of these. While it does contain homoerotic romance, this book is, in no uncertain terms, a horror novel.

Becket Merriday is chief of police of a small town in the state of New York. He gave up a career as a top-rate FBI profiler and moved to Irenic in an effort to save his marriage. It didn't work. Now, he's headed for divorce, is infatuated with his male lieutenant Sean Logan and has a serial killer on the loose. Someone or something is killing young men, slicing their heads off and cutting out their hearts, and it's up to he and Sean to solve the case.

But that's just the framework of this dark, dark story. Kirby Crow has penned a brutal study of what God, angels and the nephilim (angel/human offspring) might be like if they were anything akin to the alien warriors history hints at rather than the watered-down, kindly God and angels we think of today.

Some have called this a love story. And while I've mentioned there is such a component, I call Angels of the Deep an apocalyptic, terrifying look at why we humans can't and don't want to peer across the Veil. God and the angels he created are not like us. We might be made in his image, but we are fundamentally different. Crow shows us this in many uncomfortable ways: from how the angels and nephilim might love to how they might treat humans.

A read you'll not soon forget, Angels of the Deep is well-crafted and impeccably written. My one complaint is that it's just too damn intense. I felt bludgeoned by the time I finished. I also have to warn readers that the book contains a lot of eroticism, multiple and graphic rape and sex scenes, and a few references to past instances of pedophilia. This is not a book for the weak of heart.

I recommend it!

Masterful, brutal, and compelling

The term 'rollercoaster ride' is so frequently over-used in reference to emotional events that it has become something of a cliché, trotted out like a knackered old nag every time an author pens a turbulent book.

In the case of 'Angels of the Deep', however, there simply is no better term than 'rollercoaster ride'. The initial pages of the book, dealing with the terror of a small boy at the hands of a twisted priest ratchet the car higher and higher up the first incline. Approaching the hundredth page, as Chief Becket Merriday's already-complicated life is further convoluted by one brutal discovery after another, the car is poised at the very zenith of the ride; nothing ahead but limitless frightening space. It's when the reader hits page 127 (don't you DARE skip ahead!) that the car hurtles down into the first deep ravine, your stomach is exploring crevices in your body that you never knew existed, and Ms Crow -hithertofore manning the brakes- has just leapt out of the car. You're on your own, for the gut-wrenching ride of your life.

Forget the damp nose of the dog, nudging you for his evening walk. Forget your best beloved imploring you to go to bed. Forget that you have to get up early for work tomorrow. There is no place to stop, no pull-over on the road once you're past that page, no map-reading and nip-behind-the-bushes-for-a-loo-break moment.

Every person you will meet along this wild ride, no matter how minor their role, is a loving study in characterisation. Every place, too, is a character, with Ms Crow's lush descriptive prose pouring subtle visuals into your retinas until you can taste the darkness that envelops this entire book.

You will learn more sand-pitted ancient history than you ever thought you needed to know, and Ms Crow ties it all neatly with a bloody, vengeful bow. Shot through with anger, blood, vengeance and desire, this story delivers everything you could want, reverberating with subtle and clever semiotics, and the shocking revelation that you are reading the most unexpected and intense study in love.

Revelations. Ah. This is the rub: I can't deliver a detailed review of this book without diving into spoilers. But revelations you will have aplenty, and when they come they are shocking, intense, and delicious. This is a beautifully-crafted book that demands a second reading, just to see if it really happened.

Like leaving the cinema after an immersive movie, 'Angels of the Deep' finally disgorges its reader onto the streets of reality, as bewildered and blinking as a newborn. 'Mangled' was the first word that came to mind (still is the most apt word) when I tried to describe how I felt once finished. This story is exhausting for the reader, yet rewarding. It's almost as good as revenge, but this book is a dish best served bloody and still-warm.

This deserves to be a hardcover. Quite why Ms Crow is writing for small presses is beyond me. 'Angels of the Deep' has the chops to butt heads with Stephen King and, while it may not win against such a master of his genre, it would acquit itself damn well.

While heading into work the day after reading this book, I noticed the moon was a rare bloody orange, as if she knew what words I'd been devouring the night before. The random lipsalve I'd grabbed from the drawer and stuffed in my bag that morning had been one scented with apples (read the book; you'll know why that gave me such a start when I uncapped and used it). This is a book that makes you question reality just a little and look over your shoulder, just to make sure.

The silver screen would adore 'Angels of the Deep'. Somebody needs to tell Ridley Scott that his next opus awaits between these covers.

Good first half, terrible second half

Ms. Crow clearly knows how to write. (Warning: spoilers follow.) The first 150 or so pages of the book are very good, introducing us to Beck, his estranged wife Catherine, and his buddy Sean with a deft touch that makes them all believable, interesting, and well-rounded. The plot--a whodunit involving a murderous angel--moves forward nicely, bolstered by good pacing and some truly exceptional dialogue.

Then Beck comes face-to-face with the angel/villain Mastema, and the entire story devolves into pseudo-kabbalistic mumbo-jumbo and one rape scene after another. The fate of Catherine, in particular, is disgusting and unnecessary; could Ms. Crow not have found another way of freeing Beck up to pursue his interest in Sean? The real kicker is that for the plot's central conceit to work, the reader has to believe in and empathize with the relationship between Beck and Mastema--something Ms. Crow then renders impossible by 1) making Mastema thoroughly loathsome, and 2) demonstrating that Beck (in both past and present incarnations) has no idea why he bothers to spend time with the angel. So they have a relationship spanning 6,000 years that's based on absolutely nothing. Great. And the fight at the end of the book is just a mess, alternating between poorly described physical action and poorly thought-out mystical elements.

I'm giving the book two stars because it starts out so well; otherwise I would have given it one. Which is a shame, considering the talent that's on display here. I hope Ms. Crow's writing improves with time and practice.
