About the Author
Randy Olson was a tenured professor of marine biology at the University of New Hampshire before moving to Hollywood and entering film school at the University of Southern California. He has written and directed a number of films, including the acclaimed Flock of Dodos and he is the author of numerous successful books, including Don’t Be Such A Scientist.

Challenging scientists: Let's no longer be afraid using the good story in our own work

We may not always want to hear it, but Randy has a good message for scientists: storytelling is communication. And it works better than trying to convince folks that the intrinsic importance of science is the good story itself. The value of honest and truthful academic communication in storytelling is supported in the even broader "creative nonfiction" movement. In "Houston..." Randy demonstrates the value of story that's been part of the human experience - and science - for millennia. Only recently have we marginalized the most interesting stories of scientific research, all in an effort to become more scientific-sounding and maintain "credibility" as scientists. Ironically, Randy points out, this has lead to MORE inaccurate reporting of science in the media, not less. While some have criticized the notion of storytelling ad "bending" scientific results to make a good story, Randy responds succinctly in Chapter 11, "Yes, there is indeed every reason in the world to fear the words fraud, fabrication, deception, deceit and exaggeration when it comes to science. By all means. And there are narratives/stories that can be filled with these qualities. But there are just as many others that are accurate, honest, true and reliable." As scientists, we don't have to fear divining -- and using -- the story in our work. That's an important message, and I'm not afraid to hear it.

If you write words, you need to read this book!

I had read Randy's first book "Don't Be Such A Scientist" so when I saw he'd released another book I had to get myself a copy!
I quickly read it cover to cover - like his first book, 'Houston, We Have a Narrative' is extremely readable and filled with funny personal stories. It's the type of book you might enjoy reading on the train or on the weekend - not too technical, but you feel smarter after reading! It goes into detail about the history of storytelling, and how effective a tool narrative can be for successfully transmitting information and holding someone's interest.
But what I wasn't expecting was how USEFUL this book would be! It outlines three templates that are memorable and can be applied immediately. I write a lot of scripts, and I often struggle with the structure, spending hours reformatting sections to get a good 'flow'. But not anymore - I start with the ABT template and then the rest is easy!
I'd been using the ABT template since Randy's TED MED talk, and our best performing scripts since then have all been ABT scripts. This book outlines more on how the template can be applied to different formats of writing. It's basically the most useful writing tool you'll ever learn.
I would recommend this book for anyone who has to write extended prose - from scientific reports to film scripts. I can't believe no one spotted the ABT template before now - a real game changer. Well done again Randy Olson!

Invaluable Writing Guide

Randy Olson is the one of the best science communicators working today. Through his movies Flock of Dodos and Sizzle he has shown how science documentaries can be informative, entertaining, and even humorous. His earlier book, Don’t Think Like a Scientist, showed the problems scientists have writing for and speaking to non-scientists.
That book diagnosed the problem, but didn’t offer a cure. How could scientists and other professionals who recognize the problem become better communicators?
Houston, We Have a Narrative is the solution. This book breaks down the elements of storytelling and shows how you can use basic principles to improve your presentations and writing. He explored some of these topics in Connection: Hollywood Storytelling Meets Critical Thinking, but this book goes into far more detail and offers more helpful examples. I can’t recommend it more highly. I’ll be using it for years and passing it on to students and friends, too.
