Excellent book. Very enlightening.

As an elementary school teacher trying to shed light on all cultures and traditions, I absolutely loved this book and the way it introduced children to the far too unexplored Armenian culture. During our all-nations celebration, we took time to explore the special holiday traditions from cultures all around the world. This wonderful book perfectly depicts all of the interesting celebrations unique to the Armenian culture. My students and I all truly enjoyed this book. I would recommend it to anyone looking to introduce children to the unique and aspects of Armenian heritage.

About the Author
Grand Master Ho Sik Pak began his study of Tang Soo Do Moo Duk Kwan at the age of 10 in Yong Mun, a small town in Kyung Ki province of South Korea. He was awarded Cho Dan at the age of 13 and continued his study there until 1977.

From 1977 to 1979, Grand Master Pak served in the Korean Army and taught combat and self-defense skills to his fellow servicemen. Following his discharge from the military, he was employed as an instructor of Tang Soo Do at the American Air Force Base in Kun San province, Jun Ra Buk Do, South Korea. There he taught those same techniques to U.S. Military Personnel until 1982.

In 1982, he was chosen as a member of the Korean Olympic Tang Soo Do team and traveled to the International Tang Soo Do Championship in Atlantic City, New Jersey, contributing to the team's victory. At this time, he decided to make the United States his permanent residence and moved to Southern California.

In addition to his teaching responsibilities, he has been featured in many martial arts motion pictures, such as Best of the Best. Most recently, he starred in the featured-length film, Hunt to Kill.

In 1997 and 1999 he released a full line of instructional videos in traditional Tang Soo Do and other training techniques.

A Must Have Addition To Any Tang Soo Do Collection

I enjoyed the Complete Tang Soo Do Manual by GM Ho Sik Pak very much, I thought the layout of the forms was very well done, I especially liked the intermediate photos to help see how the framing was done,and the interpretations for the applications of the forms was very nicely done as well, I can honestly recommend this book to anyone who practices Tang Soo Do

I have been using Peter G. Beidler's Writing Matters for fifteen years because I prefer it to all other how-to writing textbooks that cross my desk. Writing Matters is far more accessible to students than the typical composition text. Each succinct chapter is itself a persuasive essay that shows (simultaneously as it tells) how to focus and develop an argument, how to write clearly and concisely, and how to anticipate and "deal with" probable reader objections. Although Beidler's book is simple, direct, and sometimes humorous, it does not condescend. Clearly Beidler understands not only writing but also student writers--their fears and misconceptions and common complaints. What I like most about Writing Matters is that it really speaks to my students. Beidler's refreshing strategy of giving the rudiments of essay writing in twenty-six mini-essays which exemplify the very precepts he is advancing is particularly helpful. After all, some students learn better by precept, other by example. Writing Matters gives them simultaneously both precept and example. The 'Editing Matters' section comprising forty-seven rules (deftly keyed in a Quick Reference Guide at the end) is a wonderful bonus. And all of this at a price that students can easily afford. The Amazing and worthwhile Leap

I have to admit to a fear of leaping from heights, which makes Mr Shindler's metaphor of a trapeze artist at the beginning of his excellent book so challenging for me. But that is the point, many of us find it challenging or seemingly impossible to make that leap, leaving us to be consigned to mediocrity and compromise.

As someone who likes to think of careers in Chaotic terms, the critical commentary around simplistic goal setting and the reference to David Clutterbuck's work are commendable.

As I read through I came to appreciate just how many good ideas are crammed into this valuable resource from attitude to presentation, learning to listening, from MARIA to PESTLE (clever acronyms that illustrate how to convey attitude and business experience). It is all seasoned with pithy quotes from Einstein, Victor Frankl, Leonardo DaVinci, Wittgenstein to the intellectual might of the Chartered Institute of Personnel and Development and Marks and Spencers!!

This is a useful book for anyone wanting to make a leap in their career. Highly recommended!

Dr. Patricia Huddleston is a professor of retailing at Michigan State University. Her career as a researcher and teacher of retailing and consumer behavior spans 30 years. Pat has extensive international research experience, including the transition economies of Russia and Poland. Her research publications focus on topics such as customer loyalty, perceptions of retail brands, and customer satisfaction with grocery stores. Dr. Stella Minahan is a Senior Lecturer in the Graduate Business School at Deakin University (Australia). She teaches retail, consumer behavior, and entrepreneurship to MBA students. Women's shopping behavior in the US!

Yes, women loves shopping! I consider this book required reading for anyone (or any retailer) who is interested in understanding (American) women's shopping behavior.
I would like to recommend this book for marketing/retailing instructors who teach (women) consumer behavior at college (undergrad and grad levels). A great book by two women authors who understand that women loves shopping through interviews with American shoppers!

Interesting and Insightful

I am a bit biased because Stella and Pat are colleagues, but I recommend you get this book! It is based on solid research so insights presented are not anecdotal or gut feelings; they are data driven. The interviews provided rich and powerful data and Stella and Pat did a masterful job of drawing appropriate conclusions and suggesting actionable strategies. And, the book is fun to read!

HTML5 is now the official standard for web pages. But another major topic on the web is games. Makzan shows how to combine the two. You should be aware that this also involves CSS stylesheets. Whenever you read of HTML5, implicitly CSS is used, as a factoring of structure away from visuals.

The book is a collection of game examples. Involving the use of JavaScript, as a simple object oriented programming language. The examples collect the visuals to be shown in web pages and the game flow logic. You should maybe focus on first defining the latter. This is the internal skeleton upon which to later draw the graphics.

A clever technique shown in Project 2 is how to use CSS classes to store state information. Some games can be designed and understood as finite state machines. If there are not too many states, and most of these have different and distinctive visuals, then the method of Project 2 could be applicable.

More broadly, the collection of example games can be used as a template starting point. This includes understanding the class inheritances used. Straightforward way for you to encapsulate behaviour in a compact manner. This is of course a general property of object oriented coding. But if you are new to games, the book is a good way to see how it is applied to your context.

Having said this, some aspects of the book seem tedious and strained. Each chapter has subsections called 'classified intel', 'prepare for lift off', 'engage thrusters'. The first time, it's cute. Later, just cheesy.

Review of HTML5 Game Development Hotshot

HTML5 has quickly supplanted Flash as the platform of choice to develop rich user experiences on the Web, and this goes for games as well. HTML5 Game Development Hotshot aims to provide you with the knowledge to take advantage of the latest technologies available by taking you step-by-step through creating eight different games of increasing complexity.

The author’s use of step-by-step hand-holding is especially thought out. I’m a person who learns by doing, so a step-by-step tutorial is just my style.

The organization of each chapter is well thought out in my opinion—each game has a mission briefing (or introduction), a set of objectives and a checklist.

Basic HTML knowledge is probably a prerequisite—you’ll need to know what HTML is, what basic HTML document structure looks like, what tags are, etc. There is also some javascript, but it is explained—even so, a knowledge of basic OO (object-oriented) programming concepts is assumed.

I would recommend this book to getting up and running quickly on HTML5 features in the context of the features of games—animations, movement physics, latest tag features (like data-* attributes, etc), and so forth.

A great book for HTML5 Game Development

At the beginning of August I have started to read the book HTML5 Games Development by Example, provided to me kindly by Packt Publishing.


You do not need to be a pro developer to make use of the book - it presents step by step the development of the games with HTML. Each chapter is divided into several sub-chapters and the code for each sub-chapter is given. Thus, you may be able to go with the author, checking the code and seeing what he actually meant.

To make the story fascinating, the games are really interesting (if you are a developer, not a gamer). Here is a list of the 8 games:

Let's go back to the book - what level of HTML do you need in advance? My opinion is that at least a basic level of HTML is needed, otherwise you will get into trouble. The book even touches object oriented programming (OOP), and although it describes it quite into detail, this is probably not a subject for a beginner. Anyway, if you are definitely into games and you are not a quitter you may go through the book successfully.

A good plus is the structure - the author gives us a mission briefing, objectives and checklist for each of the games. Thus, separating the tasks into smaller details, you learn how to deal with a complex problem step-by-step. As mentioned earlier, the book provides the code for these steps separately - you do not obtain only the big project with 1000+ lines of code, where it is quite easy to lose yourself. This is an approach I like. At the end of each chapter, you can kindly give yourself a treat, by playing the game you have created. Trust me, there is nothing more challenging than playing a game, which you have built by yourself (copied code counts as well :) )

Last but not least - there are a lot of things in game development, which can be used in the so-called "Real Projects". Making a status bar and dealing with OOP and variables is just the start.
