Three Gothic Novels: The Castle of Otranto; Vathek; Frankenstein, by Horace Walpole, William Beckford, Mary Shelley

Walpole's The Castle of Otranto, Beckford's Vathek, and Shelley's Frankenstein

The Gothic novel, which flourished from about 1765 until 1825, revels in the horrible and the supernatural, in suspense and exotic settings. This volume, with its erudite introduction by Mario Praz, presents three of the most celebrated Gothic novels: The Castle of Otranto, published pseudonymously in 1765, is one of the first of the genre and the most truly Gothic of the three. Vathek (1786), an oriental tale by an eccentric millionaire, exotically combines Gothic romanticism with the vivacity of The Arabian Nights and is a narrative tour de force. The story of Frankenstein (1818) and the monster he created is as spine-chilling today as it ever was; as in all Gothic novels, horror is the keynote.

From the Back Cover
One of the most interesting phenomena in the history of literature, the Gothic novel—which flourished from about 1765 to 1825—still has much to offer to the modern reader. Supernatural thrills, adventure and suspense, colorful settings, and, in the better examples, literary quality are all present. Unfortunately, true Gothic novels (not simply modern detective stories called "Gothic") are extremely rare books, and have never been as available as they should be.The first member in this collection, Horace Walpole's TheCastle of Otranto, published as a Christmas book for 1764, was the first and one of the greatest members of the genre. It has also been one of the most influential books in history. It motivated the Gothic revival in the arts, and it probably did more to usher in the early-19th-century Romanticism than any other single work. It also served as the model in plot, characterizations, settings, and tone for  hundreds, perhaps thousands of successors.Vathek, by the eccentric British millionaire William Beckford, is generally considered to be the high point of the Oriental tale in English literature. Certainly no one has ever written (in any European tongue) a story which better unifies the stirrings of Gothic romanticism with the color, poetry, and vivacity of the original Arabian Nights. The third novel in this collection, John Polidor's Vampyre, emerged from the same soirĂ©es of ghost-story telling in Geneva that produced Mary Shelley's Frankenstein. The first full-length vampire story in English, it initiated a very important literary chain that also leads up to the present. Included with Polidori's novel is Lord Byron's little-known Fragment, from which Polidori (who was Byron's physician in Switzerland) plagiarized his plot. These three novels (and the fragment) are still well worth reading. Generations of readers have found thrills and horrors in Walpole's fine work, while Vathek cannot be excelled in its unusual mixture of the bizarre, cruel irony, and masterful narration. Polidori's thriller still conveys chills, and the Fragment makes us all wish that Byron had completed his novel.
Unabridged republication of all four texts: second edition (with prefaces) of The Castle of Otranto, and Sir Walter Scott's Introduction; Vathek in Samuel Henley's translation, with full notes; first edition of The Vampyre, with the introductory section; Byron's Fragment. Edited and introduced by E. F. Bleiler.

About the Author
Mario Praz (1896-1982) was Professor of English Language and Literature at the University of Rome. The most celebrated of his many other books is The Romantic Agony.

Early Gothic Novels by Walpole, Beckford, and Polidori
By Michael Wischmeyer
I was new to the Gothic genre when I first encountered this Dover publication some years ago. At that time I considered the plot for The Castle of Otranto (1764) by Horace Walpole to be farfetched, almost ludicrous. The mystical Oriental tale, Vathek (1782), by William Beckford seemed endless. Only the short story titled The Vampyre (1819, by John Polidori) met my expectations.

My opinion today is quite different. I have gradually become familiar with Gothic literature, and I now appreciate just how innovative these three stories were, and to how great an extent these tales influenced later writers. I give four stars to this collection.

The eighteenth century was clearly a period of philosophical and scientific progress. And yet, many readers were immediately intrigued and entertained by the supernatural, bizarre elements in The Castle of Otranto. Hundreds of authors subsequently imitated Walpole's Gothic style. Although many of these later stories had little literary merit, the Gothic novel remained immensely popular for the following century.

Today, it is true that the supernatural aspects in The Castle of Otranto may be overworked, the dialogue is often stilted, and the plot relies too much on coincidences. Nonetheless, The Castle of Otranto remains quite entertaining and suspenseful. The lengthy introduction by Sir Walter Scott (included in the 1811 edition) illustrates the remarkable impact of "this new species of literary composition".

William Beckford's Vathek is so original that it hardly fits even the Gothic genre. Beckford, a noted scholar of early Arabian literature, provided more than fifty pages of explanatory end notes. For some reason he first published Vathek in French. Later it was translated and published in English without his approval. I still find Vathek to be overly long, but this time I was intrigued with its mystical Arabian Nights motif, its chilling characters, and its vivid portrayal of evil.

In an introduction to The Vampyre the author John Polidori claimed (possibly to increase sales) that Lord Byron had created the plot at the same literary soiree in Geneva in which Mary Shelley produced Frankenstein. Lord Byron disputed Polidori's claim and produced his own notes from that famous gathering. Regardless, The Vampyre is fascinating short story.

E. F. Bleiler edited this collection and provided a lengthy, interesting introduction to three authors that were instrumental in developing the Gothic novel.

A great primer for those interested in early Gothic fiction
By Shanna Flaschka
This is a fabulous collection representing the beginning of Gothic fiction. Otronto is the very first such work, and is a perfect illustration of the basic themes and plotlines predominant in Gothic. Although not the most polished work of fiction, it's often so bad it's funny, and definitely worth reading. The other stories are much more professional, albeit a bit drier reading. I'm especially fond of Vathek, as it more clearly represents fear fiction as it was to become. Dr. Polidori's piece is particularly intersting as he was a physician and present at the famous ghost-story-telling session(s) of Byron and the Shelley couple.
On the whole, this collection is the ideal glimpse into the genre at its rudimentary level.

Gothick Terror, Oriental Decadence, Romantic Vampyres...
By A Customer
This volume is an excellent introduction to four
works of the Gothic mindset, which hit England at
the end of the 1700s and lasted on into the early
Romantic period, all the way up to the late decadence
of the 1890s, winding up in Robert Louis Stevenson's
THE STRANGE CASE OF DR. JEKYLL AND MR. HYDE (1886),
Oscar Wilde's THE PICTURE OF DORIAN GRAY (1891), and
Bram Stoker's DRACULA (1897).
These are four of the earliest of this Gothic genre.
The volume includes Horace Walpole's THE CASTLE OF
OTRANTO (Christmas Eve, 1764); William Beckford's
VATHEK (1786); John Polidori's VAMPYRE (1819); and
a Vampire Fragment by Lord Byron (1819), "which was
published at the end of MAZEPPA in 1819."
The list of Gothic NOVELS (rather than stories)
in chronological order which make the grade are:
Horace Walpole's CASTLE OF OTRANTO (1764), Clara
Reeve's THE CHAMPION OF VIRTUE (1777), William
Beckford's VATHEK (1786), Ann Radcliffe's THE
MYSTERIES OF UDOLPHO (1794), Matthew Gregory Lewis's
THE MONK (1795), Mary Shelley's FRANKENSTEIN (1818),
John Polidori's VAMPYRE (1819), Charles R. Maturin's
MELMOTH THE WANDERER (1820).
There are excellent introductions to each of the
writers and their works at the beginning of the book.
In speaking of THE CASTLE OF OTRANTO, Bleiler says:
"This novel has been called one of the half-dozen
historically most important novels in English. The
founder of a school of fiction, the so-called Gothic
novel, it served as the direct model for an enormous
quantity of novels written up through the first
quarter of the 19th century.... It was probably
the most important source for enthusiasm for the
Middle Ages that suddenly swept Europe in the later
18th century, and many of the trappings of the early
19th century Romantic movement have been traced to
it. It embodied the spirit of an age."
There is included a series of impressive "Notes"
to the novel VATHEK: An Arabian Tale. The novel
begins in an interesting fashion: "Vathek, ninth
caliph of the race of the Abassides, was the son
of Motassem, and the grandson of Haroun al Raschid.
From an early accession to the throne, and the talents
he possessed to adorn it, his subjects were induced to
expect that his reign would be long and happy. His
figure was pleasing and majestic: but when he was
angry, one of his eyes became so terrible, that no
person could bear to behold it; and the wretch upon
whom it was fixed instantly fell backward, and
sometimes expired. For fear, however, of depopulating
his dominions and making his palace desolate, he but
rarely gave way to his anger."
And here is a sample bite from John Polidori's
VAMPYRE: "There was no colour upon her cheek, not
even upon her lip; yet there was a stillness about
her face that seemed almost as attaching as the life
that once dwelt there: --upon her neck and breast
was blood, and upon her throat were the marks of teeth
having opened the vein: -- to this the men pointed,
crying, simultaneously struck with horror, "A
Vampyre! a Vampyre!"

A remarkable time in history
By B. Chandler
Nowadays many different books have been written to explain the unfolding of humans and civilization. This book covers many great products and inventors instead of all the great wars. In the 1970's this was unique to the public. In addition, this book is the template for those to follow.
The contents include:
1 Lower than the Angles (evolution of the head)
2 The Harvest of the Seasons (the pace of cultural evolution)
3 The Grain in the Stone (blood group evidence of migration)
4 The Hidden Structure (fire)
5 The Music of the Spheres (the language of numbers)
6 The Starry Messenger (the cycle of seasons)
7 The majestic Clockwork (Kepler's laws)
8 The Drive for Power (Everyday technology)
9 The ladder of Creation (are other formulas of life possible?)
10 World Within World (the periodic table)
11 Knowledge of Certainty (There is no absolute knowledge)
12 Generation upon generation (cloning of identical forms)
13 The Long Childhood (The commitment of man)

I have the original hardback book, reference book, and study guide. The local library still has the original videotapes. You have to be an institution to purchase them.

DVD is now available in region 1. It is a tad more pricy.
This DVD set that matches or rivals the book.

This is a humanities course at the local collage. A plus was actually getting to go through the Watts Towers as a kid. This work does rings around "Connections" by James Burke because it is the story of the people behind the connections.

I am not saying that this book replaces others, but that it has more to say without resorting to today's sound byte system of writing.

Dawn of Wonder: The Wakening, Book 1, by Jonathan Renshaw

When a high-ranking officer gallops into the quiet Mistyvales, he brings a warning that shakes the countryfolk to their roots. But for Aedan, a scruffy young adventurer with veins full of fire and a head full of ideas, this officer is not what he seems. The events that follow propel Aedan on a journey that only the foolhardy or desperate would risk, leading him to the gates of the nation's royal academy - a whole world of secrets in itself.

But this is only the beginning of his discoveries. Something is stirring in the land, something more ominous than the rising threat of hostile nations. Fearful travelers whisper of an ancient power breathing over Thirna, changing it, waking it. In the very heart of these stirrings, Aedan encounters that which defies belief, leaving him speechless with terror - and wonder.

AMAZING (Because caps makes it true)
By Amazon Customer
This book is amazing. In order to get the most from this review, you need a base of what kinds of books I enjoy. I love Brandon Sanderson (The Stormlight Archive is my favorite series currently), The Kingkiller Chronicles by Patrick Rothfuss, and The Gentleman Bastards by Scott Lynch to name a few.

Now on to why you are here. This book has many elements that I have been looking for. Too many fantasy authors attribute an all powerful character to an interesting one. Within 50 pages, the author has the character besting 5 other trained individuals and by the end of the series, they might as well be facing the army by themselves. Another problem is creating intensity. How do you have down time when an army is invading your land or something troubling is happening? It is hard on the reader to stay in a consistent stressful time. More for the sake that we start rolling our eyes and say "Of COURSE that would happen now".

This book does not have those issues. The reader ages with the main character. The initial thoughts from the character are a mixture of immature and insightful. This is the delicate balance of writing a 13 year old character. You have to write them including things that they would do at that age, yet still be interesting and believable. This book stays true to it's character as he ages. He has flaws and moments in the book where you laugh and cringe for him. For all those interested, the female characters in this book are well-written as well. They aren't in need of saving and aren't a guy in a woman's body.

In short, this book has as realistic characters as a fantasy book can come with page turning intensity mixed with laugh out loud moments. I believe the author said it took 10 years to write this book (with a job on the side) and you can tell he put it to good use. I am so excited for the next 3 in the series.

Good for all readers, awesome new coming-of-age fantasy
By John
I was amazed by this new fantasy coming-of-age novel, which exceeded all of my expectations. The book is HUGE, but I read the whole thing almost non-stop in two days, constantly intrigued by the mysteries of the created world and life of the main character and supporting characters. The story is told entirely from the main character's point of view, which I really enjoyed, as the constantly switching perspectives of most new fantasy works often annoy me. Although the main character is a young teenager for the whole story, his occasionally childish perspective makes me think of that age more with nostalgia than annoyance at the MC's immaturity (which usually happens in books with young MCs). All of the characters are realistic in their actions and motivations, and, although there is typically a clear line between the good guys and bad guys, no character is perfect and struggles with various faults and temptations. The book even addresses on more serious topics such as abuse, cultural intolerance, and religion, though never in a way that feels preachy or overdone (more in the way of addressing serious topics that are real and need to be addressed in the life of the main character). The main character (though young) has enough faults to be relatable but enough strengths to be admired and someone I would like to be (an important and difficult balance that many books have a difficult time maintaining). Additionally, you get a TON of reading material for a cheap price, with no discernible editing errors (very unexpected and amazing in an indie author). Also, despite handling some heavy topics, this book has content suitable for all ages of readers (no cursing, sex scenes, or gratuitous violence), although the writing style is in no way simplistic or dumbed-down for younger readers. When thinking of what the target audience of this book probably is, I realize that I can't imagine an age past 10 that I would not immensely enjoy this novel.

The only possible faults with this book that I can come up with are that it follows a very overdone fantasy trope (a gifted young boy's coming-of-age in an academy) and that the next books in the series are not out yet. Despite following an overdone theme, this book brings me back to why that theme is so popular, and in my opinion is second only to (if not even with) Rothfus' Kingkiller Chronicles, one of my all time favorites. Even following standard rules of this genre, everything feels very realistic for youths of that age (I especially liked the way the young romances were handled). This is also very much the first book in a series, and there are many potential mysteries and avenues for development of characters and the created world that are hinted at in this book but left to future books to encounter more thoroughly.

All in all, I LOVED this book, more than any I've read in years, and can't wait for the next in the series. I will soon be recommending this to both friends and enemies: friends to share in the enjoyment of this first book, and enemies to share the suffering of waiting for book 2.

A review for the more mature audience
By Andrew
First off, let me get this off my chest. This book read like a knock off of Anthony Ryan's Blood Song, but for a younger age. At the beginning I figured Jonathan Renshaw and Anthony Ryan had a shared imagination but as I read further, I started to doubt it. Sorry Jon, but this book reads like you tried to re-write Ryan's work; not so far as to call it plagiarism, but close enough to turn my stomach a bit. Anyways whatever you do, don't recreate his second two books. Tower Lord and Queen of Fire were terrible!

That said, the book, while not even close to the level of Anthony Ryan’s, was an enjoyable read. Written more for the younger crowd, some of the book read like the Hardy Boys or other young teen novels.

The biggest issues (no plot spoiler's this is purely a review of Renshaw's writing):
A: The clumsy way he developed Aedan and his relationship with his father was by far the biggest distractor from the book. I kept trying to guess what was going on without even coming close. It pulled me out of the story as I puzzled what I was reading and why. I put a spoiler at the very end of this review. I suggest first time readers go ahead and read it so as to clear some things up and clarify some of the events in the beginning of the book. I don't know why it was written this way but it made no sense.
B: Renshaw is a little naive and I had to ignore some of the author's concepts forced into the plot in contrast to the very world he was attempting to create; ie modern social issues and technology crammed into the wrong era; its fantasy, but even fantasy has its limits. Additionally, Renshaw's military tactical understandings need work. These parts weren't so bad that I had to force myself to read through them but they distracted from the story.
C: Renshaw relies a little too heavy on the forced narrative that a lot of writers get caught up in when the character is "training." A lot of sentences droned on about the training but there was little meat; it felt like gnawing on bones. This distracted away from the book and sometimes it felt like I was reading "Disney movie magic" where the lead character sings a song and is now transformed into a hero. And at other times I felt like I was reading a recipe rather than a story due to the monotony and laundry list of what they were "training" to do. If you read Anthony Ryan's Blood Song (mentioned above), you will understand where I'm coming from; there is a stark contrast between these two writers. Anthony Ryan got it right, if fact more than any other writer in my history of fantasy IMHO. When you read Blood Song, you didn’t read about the training, you experienced it and it was raw. Renshaw didn't get it wrong but he got it a lot less right. It was just words with little supporting emotion.
D: Renshaw's pacing was a little off. It was as if Renshaw was at odds with himself, on one hand creating the stereotypical fantasy young hero genius surrounded by clumsy old oafs and on the other, trying to maintain the reality and fragility of the 13yo.
E: Renshaw's foreshadowing and overall narration needs work. He continues to fall victim to the classic "narrator induced" foreshadowing where he tries to narrate suspense in to parts that usually doesn't need it. Additionally, there are times where the book (I want to say plot here, but there wasn't much of one; see the next comment) is progressed with force by the narrator/author and the reader just has to hit the "I believe" button and continue reading.
F: Such a slow and lumbering plot. Imagine you’re driving on vacation and stuck in traffic for 8 hours. That’s how the plot progressed. For more than half the book, or even the entire book depending on how critical you are, the main plot of the series is never presented, or understood. It felt like the entire book was an intro and book two will be the actual start of the series.

While I come off as critical, I did like the book. It didn't keep me up all night, but being in a fantasy book doldrums, it was an overall enjoyable read.

*******************PLOT SPOILER (ish)*******************

Aedan's dad is abusive and beats him and his mom, giving Aedan a complex. I don't know why it took so long to reveal this in the book.

Rainbow Crocheted Afghans: A Block-by-Block Guide to Creating Colorful Blankets and Throws, by Amanda Perkins

This book is for those crocheters who have moved on from the humble granny square and are looking for more complex motifs, in a range of shapes and styles, that can be joined together to create more sophisticated finished pieces. Amanda's blankets, afghans and throws are beautifully worked, and her careful use of color and pattern gives stunning results that are deceptively easy to achieve.

The book begins with some basic instruction on yarns and hooks, how to join motifs, sewing in ends, blocking, and yarn weight and tension, but no instruction on how to crochet, as this is not a beginner's book. For each blanket there is an index of motifs used, accompanied by the instructions for how to make them: both in written form and as a chart. The blocks include a range of shapes including circles, triangles, flowers, stars, diamonds and hexagons. Also provided are the various 'fillers', designed to fill the little gaps between the motifs in the finished blanket or throw. Each project has a full color chart, and takes the reader step by step through how to construct their blanket, block by block. At the end of each of the ten projects are two further color variations.

This book is fantastic..
By Melanie Rae
This book is fantastic....as is all of Amanda's work. Amanda's colour sense is brilliant, as well as infectious. As a result, her work focuses on the use of colour rather than lots of complicated stitches and techniques...this book is no exception. Each pattern contains no more than 3 motifs, so even a beginner can start with a blanket containing a single motif. In addition each pattern gives three potential colourways for ideas; the possibilities are endless.

The Path to Beast Tamer / Iron Maiden well laid out
By gt surber
"The Beast Tamer" by Andrew Read, Senior RKC, is an excellent guide to achieving the status of "Beast Tamer." My only complaint with the book is that the only place I could find the definition of "Beast Tamer" is on the back cover. Otherwise this is an excellent guide, written by an individual who has tamed the beast (a 48kg KB) - "flawlessly perform a Pistol, a Pull up and a Press - with a 108 lb kettlebell." Andrew Read states that less than 1% of the 1500+ RKC certified individuals have achieved the Beast Tamer level. The version of the press required is a standing single KB arm press. The pullup requires that the individual weight himself with a 108lb KB while doing the pullup in addition to his own body weight. For the pistol, the man holds the KB in front of his chest. There are also several detailed interviews and progressions to the status of Beast Tamer from others other have tamed the Beast.

This book also will lead women to the Iron Maiden challenge, the same lifts, but with the 53 lb KB.

Andrew Read's first recommendation is to get strong by working through Wade's "Convict Conditioning I." Andrew states repeatedly that a very broad, well developed, basic strength is required before entering upon a program to conquer "the beast." Then Andrew lays out a series of progressions, that if followed over a long period of time, will allow an individual to do the lifts as listed above.

The directions for the exercises are clear and easily followed. The pictures are large and excellent giving excellent support to the verbal descriptions. The progressions are well laid out, and while difficult, are easily followed.

The warnings on page 10 do apply: "Trying to lift too heavy, pushing too hard too often -- are all signs of not being ready for the Beast. This is a race won by patient dedication to the skill of strength. In most cases it will not be over quickly."

Review

"Hendricks and Schill provide the most comprehensive collection on the use of social media in the 2012 presidential campaign. This impressive volume provides insight into the growing importance, role, and scope of social media in contemporary political campaigns."--Robert Denton, Virginia Tech

"Presidential Campaigning and Social Media is a good, thorough examination of the uses and impact of new technological advancements on the political landscape. It does an excellent job of providing a backdrop for research into social media and the way that it shapes the behavior of voters."--Michael K. Romano, Western Michigan University

"In fact, the greatest contribution of Presidential Campaigning and Social
Media may be that it lays the groundwork for future social media research. The book cannot
provide definitive answers about a phenomenon that is still evolving, but it does provide
a solid research foundation upon which scholars can build." --Kyle Heim, Seton Hall University, Presidential Studies Quarterly

From Publishers Weekly
In this riveting tour de force, Boston University history professor Dallek (Flawed Giant: Lyndon Johnson and His Times, 1961-1973) delivers what will most assuredly become the benchmark JFK biography for this generation. A master of the art of narrative history, Dallek is also the first biographer since Doris Kearns Goodwin to be granted unrestricted access to key Kennedy family papers (most importantly, the Joseph and Rose Kennedy Papers) in the JFK Library. This is a substantial and significant trove to which Dallek brings a refreshingly critical eye. He has also mined many nuggets of key information from the papers of JFK's colleagues, doctors and friends. Thus Dallek has significant new ground to break on a range of fronts including but not limited to Kennedy's health, politics, personal recklessness and love affairs. Dallek's revelations about JFK's health, based on previously unavailable medical files maintained by Kennedy's personal physician, have already received significant publicity from the Atlantic excerpt in December 2002. But here Dallek expands on that information and reveals (for the first time) the full extent of the medical coverup orchestrated by the Kennedy family: a coverup that involved the destruction of key medical records even after JFK was in his grave. On the political front, Dallek uses new inside information from a Kennedy associate to reveal the detailed mechanics (and enormous scope) of the use of Kennedy money to purchase the West Virginia primary in 1960. At the same time, Dallek has new evidence on both Jack's philandering and his recklessness. Example: During the same 1960 campaign on which his father spent millions, JFK risked it all by inviting an underage cheerleader to his hotel room. As is appropriate, close to two-thirds of this biography covers Kennedy's truncated presidency. In one of the book's most important sections, Dallek marshals new evidence that JFK did not view with favor the expansion of the war in Vietnam, and that he most likely would not have sanctioned such an expansion. Throughout the book, Dallek stops short of worshipping his subject. He is a Kennedy admirer, but he never allows this admiration to cloud either his focus or his truth telling. Dallek is to be thanked for providing the thoroughly researched, well-sourced, responsible and readable biography that has for so long been wanting in Kennedy scholarship. Illus. not seen by PW.

From The New Yorker
It's hard to believe that someone could find anything new to say about John F. Kennedy, but Dallek succeeds in this riveting and well-documented biography. Despite plentiful revelations about Kennedy's private life, the book is very much a political biography, which keenly explores Kennedy's grasp of modern political campaigning. (The account of how the Kennedy machine managed the issue of his Catholicism in the 1960 West Virginia primary is particularly telling.) But he wasn't always sure what to do with power once he had it. His ideas on domestic policy were surprisingly conventional, and his foreign policy seems jingoistic. Kennedy, however, had the ability to change his mind—no small accomplishment for a President—and by the time he died he was a considerably more sophisticated leader. One need not accept Dallek's fanciful, if familiar, conclusion—that, had Kennedy lived, he might have pulled the United States out of Vietnam—to think that J.F.K.'s political career was a work in progress that was arrested too soon.

Spell-Binding Biography Of JFK's Life
By Barron Laycock
So much has been written about John F. Kennedy and his family that it perhaps hard to conceive of a book that could add much to a discussion about the meaning and purpose of his life. Yet that is exactly what this erudite and well-written new biography by acclaimed biographer and historian Robert Dallek accomplishes. For those of us steeped in the flood of Kennedy biographies that flowed after his assassination, this refreshing and revealing new look by famed historian Robert Dallek is a Godsend. It mines a lot of previously unavailable material only recently made available, and interprets this new information in a way that both questions and extends the Kennedy legend.
JFK has become so much a figure of legend that it is useful to see him in the way that he is masterfully portrayed here, as a much more ordinary human being than he is often pictured as being, a person more profoundly sidelined and marginalized by serious illness and physical handicaps than is generally known. Yet by revealing these aspects of John Kennedy's existential circumstances, JFK inevitably becomes a much more admirable public and private figure, as someone who was able, often through sheer force of will, to make the most of out of every single day. Kennedy was a great believer in the commonplace Zen notion of "being here now", on focusing on the immediate present and enjoying every moment by wringing it of all its intrinsic possibilities.
As a man in constant pain, for example, it brings new meaning to other aspects of his known personality, such as his admiration for Green Berets and active sports. As compromised as he was by his physical limitations, he did his damnedest to fully engage himself in life. It is revealing, too, in its relevance toward his admiration of Hemingway, and Hemingway's coda regarding what constitutes courage; grace under pressure. And Kennedy fits the definition of a courageous man along a number of dimensions.
On the other hand, new facts surrounding the way the Kennedy family hid such aspects of JFK's life from view are cause for consternation, as they show the extent to which Joe Kennedy, JFK's imperious and ambitious father, was willing to go to further his son's political ambitions en route to the White House. He twisted facts, withheld important medical reports, and paid off officials to guard against the truth regarding his son's medical condition becoming public. Moreover, the degree to which the elder Kennedy used corrupt political practices to further JFK's efforts to become the Democratic nominee, while long suspected and much discussed previously, are even more scandalous.
Finally, Dallek shows the ways in which JFK was a man living on the edge, a man willing to risk it all for an infantile sexual tryst with an under-aged cheerleader while on the campaign trail in 1960, a man who evidently got a kick out of sneaking hookers into the White House for pool parties while Jackie was away with the children. In sum, this is a biography bound to become the new standard bearer for Kennedy works precisely because he is so successful in showing all the many and often-contradictory strands of Kennedy's personality and life circumstances made him such a pivotal figure in contemporary American history. This is a great book I recommend for anyone as a good choice for an entertaining and informative summer read! Enjoy!

"Pay any price, bear any burden..."
By Sugunan
What you will like about this book:

1) The apt title: it's a nice little turn of phrase which both recalls and overturns the biographical genre. Also, it reminds us that JFK's life was unfinished in two respects: he died young, and he died without completing his term in office.

2) The sober treatment of the subject. Dalleck neither sensationalises JFK nor does he excoriate him. There is an admirable even-handedness in his assessment of JFK's achievements and fiascos.

3) The slow, patient accumulation of facts upon facts, which might make for a long book, but which help to build up a thorough picture of what exactly happened. Especially useful if this is you first Kennedy biography or if your knowledge of this era is a little hazy.

4) The sheer drama of the events that unfold. Kennedy's tenure was brief but the crises he had to deal with were of monumental proportions. Especially engrossing are his confrontations with Kruschev during the Berlin Crisis and the Cuban Missile Crisis.

What you may not like about this book:

1) I never thought I'd be tempted to put away a book about Kennedy, but I almost did. The first 200 pages were especially hard going. Most exasperating were the overlong, involved discussions about Kennedy's medical problems. Of course these are relevant to his life-story, but they are interesting only up to a point. Then they become tiresome and spoil the pacing of the narrative. One can safely skip these parts and move on to the "story".

2) Dalleck's writing style: Now don't get me wrong...Mr Dalleck is a fine writer and his expositions are very clear and sometimes brilliant. I thought the epilogue was especially well-written. But his style is too deadpan to generate any excitement in the reader. I think a life as colourful and portentous as Kennedy's deserves a narrative with more panache and perhaps a little flamboyance.

3) Whatever happened to Kennedy's private life ? There is adequate treatment of his growing up years and of his relationship with elder brother Joe. But his relations with women, with his wife and children, what he did when he was not being "political", all this gets only cursory treatment. The omission is especially glaring after Kennedy assumes the presidency. From then on the book is almost entirely political. This means that it falls short of being a complete biography.

4) As an old hand at reading biographies -I've recently read books on Mao, Hitler, Gandhi, Lincoln, Napolean, Indira Gandhi, Darwin, Einstein--I know that one of the most effective things a biographer can do is to provide a sort of leitmotif, a common thread running through the book and at various lifestages, that helps to explain and understand the character. Without such a device, the reader doesn't get a satisfying grasp of the protagonist. The only recurring theme is Kennedy's medical problems and how these might explain his actions. There are others, but they are not explicitly stated. Dalleck tries to do this by rounding things up in the epilogue, but it's a case of too little, too late.

REMEMBERING WHAT WAS LOST
By Rev. C Bryant
When my son was about 20, the two of us saw Oliver Stone's JFK. This semi-hysterical film, based on the theories of New Orleans District Attorney Jim Garrison, posited a conspiracy in the death of President Kennedy. My son asked me about the film's historicity. I replied that I doubted its historical veracity, but that it caused me to remember what was lost when President Kennedy died. "The assassin," I said, "stole our future from us." As a 57-year-old male European-American, I certainly believe that the history of the past forty years would have been different had President Kennedy lived. Robert Dallek helped me to understand why I feel that way, and that's one of the marks of great biography. Americans who were not yet born in 1965 cannot always understand the catastrophe that was Vietnam. It changed America in fundamental ways, prolonging the Cold War, dividing the country in equally fundamental ways, paving the way for the radical Republicanism that now dominates our foreign and domestic policy. Kennedy saw the seeds of all three things in the bitterly divisive debate over Vietnam occurring in his administration in 1963. It caused him to lament that his government was coming apart. Dallek convinces me that, had Kennedy returned alive from Dallas, the President would have ended American involvement in Vietnam.
A second way Dallek touches me is in his description of the role of West Virginia in the 1960 campaign. For decades, I had assumed that Daddy Joe's money bought the state for JFK, an assumption (erroneously) repeated by several of these reviewers. The President himself said, "I owe my presidency to the people of West Virginia." Dallek demonstrates that the situation was at once more simple and more complicated. The unique nature of West Virginia politics, which turns on the "slate" system, encourages candidates to "spread money around." When I was a pastor in WV, the richest (and most troublesome) man in the congregation was married to the daughter of the former sheriff of our county. She was the one with the money, because her father had collected (and kept) money from candidates who wished to be placed on the slate in our county. The Kennedys understood this system and used it better than their opponents, but that doesn't mean they "bought" the election. The President meant that WV had proven that a Catholic candidate could win in a predominantly Protestant state.
In the Acknowledgements, Dallek thanks his son and daughter for showing him the things younger Americans need to know in order to appreciate the Kennedy presidency. The lasting value of Dallek's biography, I believe, will be its ability to instruct such citizens in their own history--that there once was a time when presidents thought less of re-election and more of statesmanship, in which war, particularly nuclear war, was considered abhorrent, in which the notion of impeaching a president for sexual dalliances was laughable, in which personal courage and fortitude trumped political correctness. If this is a definition of Camelot, then I say, "bring it on."
