Arthur Thomas Hatto, FBA (1910 2010) was a scholar of medieval German literature and, especially after his retirement from the University of London, where he served as Professor of German from 1953 to 1977, the comparative study of oral heroic epic poetry. He was elected an Honorary Fellow of the School of Oriental and African Studies, of which he had served as a Governor, and a Corresponding Member of the Finno-Ugrian Society. His other publications include translations from Middle High German poems for Penguin Classics: Tristan (1960), the Nibelungenlied (1965), and Parzival (1980); the edition and translation The Memorial Feast for Kokotoy-Khan (Kokotoydun A ): A Kirghiz Epic Poem (1977); general editorship of Traditions of Heroic and Epic Poetry (1980 1989), the two-volume proceedings of the London Seminar on Epic, which Hatto chaired from 1964 to 1972; Essays on Medieval German and Other Poetry (1980); and The Mohave Heroic Epic of Inyo-Kutavere (1999).

Great literature, great edition

Around the middle of the 12th century, an author we know only as Thomas wrote a French version of the popular legend of the star-crossed lovers Tristan and Ysolt (usually known in English as Tristram and Yseult). Thomas may have been French or English. Most of his poem has been lost. A generation or two later (the dates for both authors are uncertain) a Strassburger named Gottfried wrote a German version of the story, using Thomas as his source. Gottfried died before completing the work. By extraordinary coincidence, the bulk of what remains of Thomas's work is the very part that Gottfried did not live to write. Thomas carries on exactly where Gottfried leaves off. The obvious thing therefore, is to translate Gottfried and Thomas in one volume, to give a complete narrative. That's what Hatto does, in his usual accurate, precise and elegant English, in this excellent Penguin Classics edition.

Hatto's editorial contributions, consisting of an Introduction and 7 Appendices, give as much information as most readers will require. One can sense the effort of will Hatto needed, to stop himself writing volumes more.

So how good a story is it? Well, it's a classic romance, from a time when sexual relations were being redefined, and which has provided inspiration for countless other romances since, most notably Romeo and Juliet. It does not read like a modern novel, for the very good reason that it isn't one. It is a medieval German poem translated into modern English prose, so much of the underlying social logic, and many of the aesthetics, will inevitably be lost to us. But it does contain some very memorable moments and it stands as an important milestone on the progress of western literature, and as an invaluable insight into European medieval culture.

Best Version of Tristan with extras and great Translation

While not many preople read Strassburgs "tristan" it has been around for 800 years for some reason. It must be because it is a good. The story itself has been told and retold in opera and whats present in this version is an embelishement of the english "Tristram" romance - much of which is lost. This version is translated by the great A T Hatto who was among the greatest scholars of Middle Ages Romances. Though originally translated in 1961 or a story first appearing in 1215 this book is suprisingly readable and far more engrossing than Parsival or some of the other Aurthurian romances.

But if you are reading this book I assume you are not reading this simply for enjoyment while waiting for Dan Brown's next Work. You are probably reading this in some sort of acedemic setting whether it be in univesity or your own pursuit. Here is where the book should be really useful. The introductrion which includes much of the orginal text and explains how the story developed into what makes up the body of the text. There are footnotes on nearly every other page and while I prefer more I wont say that they are necessary.

This is a great work for study of Middle Ages German literature. This work was written in the 13th Century which is the start of a great awakening of the spirit and the time that can be called the high middle ages. Beyond this this is also a great romance and a readable story. No matter on what level you choose to read this work it should be satisfying and be a work what you will want to reread.

Excellent!

I wish I could get every romantic idealist I know to read this book. It's the core stuff of romantic obsession... and if you haven't studied the subject in depth, it's probably not what you thought it would be! Much like many relationships in modern days that are unknowingly based on this myth -- replayed, as it is, in countless novels, tv stories, movies and even tv news reports -- this story holds surprises that should no longer be surprising. But that is the stuff, as Joseph Campbell would have said, of living Myth -- it is not living unless it is believed, not as myth, but as fact.

This book should be taught in every high school. Not likely, though. It is so fundamental to modern mythical thinking, it is virtually taboo.

Highly recommended.

Linenthal (religion and American culture, Univ. of Wisconsin, Oshkosh) describes the 15-year effort to create a national museum commemorating the Holocaust. He begins with the creation in May 1978 of the President's Commission on the Holocaust during the Carter administration. He then covers issues related to the location, design, and construction of the museum building. Linenthal's most significant contribution is the chapter on defining and representing the horror of the Holocaust. He skillfully describes the dilemmas facing the organizers of the exhibits, such as how to depict the story of mass murder and yet personalize it, how to represent the Nazis and other perpetrators of the Holocaust in the exhibit, and whether non-Jewish victims should be included. President Carter created the President's Commission on the Holocaust in 1978. It then took 15 years of bitter and emotional debate to design and build the U.S. Holocaust Memorial Museum in Washington, D.C. Linenthal, author of Sacred Grounds: Americans and Their Battlefields (1991), chronicles all that went on during those painful and acrimonious years as Holocaust survivors, politicians, museum professionals, historians, and architects struggled to define "the boundaries of Holocaust memory." Linenthal deftly summarizes all the complex issues that had to be resolved. Jews believed that they should be the focus, but members of other groups victimized by the Holocaust demanded equal representation. Some felt the memorial should be in New York; others fretted over whether Washington, D.C., was an appropriate location. And what an agonizing task it was to create a memorial that both eulogized and educated without simplifying, sensationalizing, or offending. Linenthal portrays major players, including Elie Wiesel, Yaffa Eliach, and architect James Ingo Freed, who was finally able to visualize a building "expressive of the event" after traveling to Auschwitz. Preserving Memory is the story of how the United States Holocaust Museum was made. After reading this book, I'm rather amazed the museum was made at all. On November 1, 1978, President Carter issued Executive Order 12093, creating the President's Commission on the Holocaust. Twelve commissioners were sworn in on February 1, 1979. Thus began the road to the Making of the United States Holocaust Museum. Some of the Commissioners were survivors of the Holocaust. With their background, some of them wanted to be very sure of what they were doing. There were many battles over almost everything to do with the museum. To further complicate things, in dealing with the White House, some things became almost political battles. The museum began to be built in the late 1980's, and was opened in April 1993. This is a great book, but it requires a lot of perseverance to read it. Some of the story tends to bog down, which is why I gave it four stars. Still, if you love history and can stick with it this is a book worth reading. A well written book that explains much about the memory of the Holocaust.

Excellent book about fascinating topic.

This book may appeal to a small audience, but it tells a great story. It describes the lengthy but worthwhile struggle of a group of people doing what seemed impossible at first: building a museum that was in Washington and the present , but about events that took place in Europe in the past. And finding a way to make it relevant and moving to all those seeking inspiration for how to live morally in their world. The writer finds a way to make the struggles come alive, as the Holocaust Commission found a way to create a museum that was Jewish but of value to all visitors, a story of horror that could be at home next to the grassy Mall and marble elegance of Washington DC. It made me want to examine and re-examine every square inch of the museum now that I understood how much love and work had gone into it.

Entries in the Benezit briefly describe the artist's life and summarize major shows and awards. Occasionally an example of an artist's signature is provided. To say that an artist is "listed" usually means that there is an entry on the artist in the Benezit.
This compilation is wondrous. One is not educated in art history if one is not familiar with the Benezit. Caveat: the Benezit is written in French.

Estoy contenta que al final lo lei. Es un libro bastante diferente de lo comun, que logro sorprenderme (lo cual no es facil últimamente). La historia comienza con Dash, yn chico bastate solitario y amargado que esta solo para las navidades y en su libreria favorita consigue un libro rojo. Este libro tiene pistas que solo un chico como el podria seguirlas, y el precio de esto sera conocer a Lilly.

Lilly es una chica bastante rara. Es muy delicada, fácil de avergonzar y bastante torpe, pero fácil de gustar. Los personajes, aunque me gustaron, no me parecen muy realistas, pero tengo que decir que me gustan como pareja.

Sus intercambios con el cuaderno eran geniales, me encantaba leerlos. En verdad queria que se conocieran, pero al final creo que me gusto mas cuando hablaban por medio del cuaderno, estaban tan incómodos cuando hablaban en persona.

Me gusto que cada autor se encargara de escribir a uno de los personajes, y que los capitulos que intercambiaran entre un personaje y el otro, porque me ayudo a entender lo que pasa por sus cabezas.

En general, me encanto Cuaderno para Dos, por me parecio un libro original que me sorprendia en cada capitulo. Es una historia dulce, y lo recomiendo si estan buscando un romance juvenil fresco y azucarado.

Una historia romántica adolescente rápida, tierna y emocionante. Los personajes, no solo los dos protagonistas, van revelándose como seres que escapan de los clichés y se van constituyendo en jóvenes un poco más complejos que lo que parecen ser al comienzo de la novela. El paso de una voz narrativa a la otra, también, consigue escapar de lo convencional, diferenciándose una de la otra claramente. Si bien la historia tiene todos los elementos de la más clásica comedia romántica, hay un cierto desenfado y un cariño por los personajes que presenta que la hace sorprendente y amena por partes iguales.

Great read!

Page 31: "There are so many hungry people in the world. I doubt the woman selling apples there cares in the least for what happened a thousand years ago, or even yesterday. Yesterday, at least, the sun was shining."

That was Indy contemplating and being philosophical about his profession as an archaelogist in his conversation with Marcus Brody, the director of special acquisitions for the American Museum of Natural History in New York. Brody is one of Indy's closest, long-time friends and also the one who funds most of his expeditions. "We each have our part to play" was Brody's response to Indy. I agree with the museum director. The reason I included that exchange is because Indy has been fired from his job as a professor in the Princeton University. That leads him to the latest (reluctant) adventure of finding the stolen Voynich Manuscript, an ancient alchemist's manuscript. Coincidentally, Alistair Dunstin, the world's leading authority on alchemy also disappeared at the same time the manuscript was stolen.

In all of Indy's stories, there's sure to be a beautiful female character. In this case, it's the intriguing red-haired Alecia Dunstin, a shy librarian and "reluctant psychic". She is Alistair's twin. Together, they head off to Rome and straight into terrible danger (hot on their trail is the Mussolini's fascists) to find the manuscript and Alistair. Indy pulls off lots of stunts in this instalment leaving me near breathless and wondering what he'll do next.

Once again, Max McCoy did a wonderful job. I mixed up the reading sequence because I read The Dinosaur Eggs before The Philosopher's Stone. As always, Indy's sense of humour is getting better and better under the good hands of McCoy.

A Good Book.

Overall, I would say that this was a good book. However, there are a few things that bothered me.
1. The opening sequence was, I feel, meant to mimic the opening of Raiders in an attempt at a tie-in - Maybe Indy doesn't have much luck at procuring Skull Artifacts? But unfortunately it felt more like jungle re-tread than new territory.
2. Evidently Indiana Jones can't find anyone but Redheads to fall for. This seems to be a common thread amongst all three Authors of this series. I mean, I like a good Redhead as much as the next guy, but come on! Not to mention I felt that McCoy was trying too hard to make Alecia Dunstin an independent, free-willed type rather than a three-dimensional character.
3. I really liked the Sarducci character and felt that he was a good solid character with plenty of background, etc. But Alistair Dunstin was cardboard at best. He was really a disappointment after waiting the entire novel to meet him. Not to mention the fact that McCoy foreshadowed him too much. You knew what he was going to do before he did.
4. The book just ended. I can't really say that I appreciate books that just end. Even though the next book, Indiana Jones and the Dinosaur Eggs, pretty well picks up where Philosopher's Stone leaves off, the book built you up until the end and then just kind of petered out in a Deus Ex Machination. On a side note, Alistair Dunstin's last act, in an attempt at repentance, was lame at best and most definitely out of character.
As I said before, overall it is a good book. If you are an Indiana Jones fan and a fan of the books in particular, I would definitely recommend this book. It will entertain you for the few hours it takes to read it.

What's it take to be an astronaut

How cool is this book! It made me want to become and astronaut!
The book covers the basics of what it takes to become an astronaut, the types of astronauts there are, the training required, and then tidbits of what it's like in space, with a page devoted the parts of the spacesuit, and a page devoted to the workings of the space toilet. The illustrations are not totally my style, but they work, and certainly make space life look exciting. There's more information in the back matter, and suggestions for places to visit, books to read, etc. All in all, I simply adored this concept and the execution. I mean, the Vomit Comet and freeze-dried ice cream! What's not to love! :)

So cute and informative

I bought this to go a long with a space play set for my 4 year old son. I love that it has bright and colorful pictures and the information, though basic, is accurate. I like that it didn't just talk about flying a space shuttle but has other jobs for astronauts. I've already had to read this to my son 10 times since Christmas. It's a hit!

James Oliver Curwood was an early 20th century writer who lived in Michigan, where he published several novels a year. Curwood loved the outdoors and is known for his conservation efforts. His action/adventure stories are often set in Canada or northern United States. The Wolf Hunters begins: "Cold winter lay deep in the Canadian wilderness. Over it the moon was rising, like a red pulsating ball, lighting up the vast white silence of the night in a shimmering glow. Not a sound broke the stillness of the desolation. It was too late for the life of day, too early for the nocturnal roamings and voices of the creatures of the night. Like the basin of a great amphitheater the frozen lake lay revealed in the light of the moon and a billion stars. Beyond it rose the spruce forest, black and forbidding. Along its nearer edges stood hushed walls of tamarack, bowed in the smothering clutch of snow and ice, shut in by impenetrable gloom."

Wonderful story

If you like the works of Jack London, such as "Call of the Wild", you will like this book. Set in the unspoiled wilderness of Canada, it is a story of adventure and danger, friendship and mutual trust. Written in the early 1900's it is suitable for pre-teens and teenagers. It is a refreshing change from modern sexually explicit and violent entertainment.

Adventure in the Canadian wilderness

Reading this book was a pleasure. It was good right from the beginng until the end and I have recommended it to my friends. James Currwood's description of the the struggle for life in the Canadian wilderness at the turn of the century kept me wanting to read more. This novel is a well written story of survival, exploration and discovery in what is a harsh but beautifull enviroment, vividly described by the author, if your looking for a great adventure then read "THE WOLF HUNTERS".

I just finished this...it was just a really good, fast moving book. I finished it not 15 minutes ago, and came to look for more books by the author. I think that is a good sign of how much I liked it.

Interesting poses but would like to see more models

I happen to like the fact these are in black and white, since the simplicity of it makes you familiar with the form. I already have The Nude Figure for my other references for life drawing. As another person said, this is not the best book to get reference for illustrative foreshortening. This book is more to train your eye to capture various parts of the form in foreshortening.

I thought it was interesting how the author noted that it was difficult these days to find models because of people's need to do body alternations like piercings and tattoos.

While I find the models average, I would have liked to seen a few different models like overweight or even more athletic to get variations of the form in perspective. I wouldn't even mind old people, but I'm not sure if the elderly could perform in some of those poses.

Most of the poses are in seated or lying down positions, I remember the author saying also that a lot of poses even in perspective started looking the same.

I got some use out of the book, for the photography was clear enough for me. I also like using it as an exercise to recognize the form, like certain muscle and bone groups would look like in certain perspectives. I think too many people want to copy and not understand the true value of learning and utilizing reference.

It's not an AMAZING book, but it's still useful.

This book is a valuable tool for drawing and understanding human bodies. I actually used it a lot. It's worth the price. (But there arent any shots of standing people from the top).

Truth in advertising

I saw a copy of this book for all of about 5 minutes before I
knew this was it for demonstrating foreshortening in figure drawing.
I have not had much time to spend with the book in the interim, but I
fully believe it will stand up to it's promise.
