interesting but shallow

I was eager to read this book, to understand how publish/subscribe in general and TIBCO middleware in particular change system architecture and business strategy. What is now possible that is not supported well by traditional client/server systems? And who would know more about this topic than Ranadive, the founder and CEO of TIBCO?
Unfortunately this book does not deliver. The examples are shallow, explaining a little but not to a deep enough level to communicate more than superficialities. And the text between the example is repetitive: too much breathless ad copy and not enough content.

Concrete steps to reorganising to win

Should be made compulsory reading for all chief executives who intend to stay on top of their organisations in the next few years. Ranadive not only explains how infomation will drive the economy (from yesterday), he gave concrete steps on how an organisation may move towards using info as a tool to maximise competitve advantage. Knowledge management, making the org live for the moment, being event-driven (and proactive to the latest drip of info)...etc... Ranadive outlines to great detail how one could set up a system to achieve it. The methodologies described are not singularly his own opinion: the book is well referenced and many top companies and gurus are already on to the new economy. Only negative is: a little bit too "techy" for the general CEO audience.
Do you want to join those who "Get it."? Or do you "get it" at all?

A peek into a billionaire's mind...

I was intrigued by the fact that Mr. Ranadive has managed to build one of the largest (market cap) software companies in the United States, and was pleased to find that a good section of his book concentrated on his philosophies when starting TIBCO. On the other hand, a good part of this book is spent hyping TIBCO's software...which you can't really blame the guy for, can you? This book is at least as much sales promotional material as anything else, but for those who are interested in TIBCO's software, it's quite informative; it's like getting a sales pitch from *the* sales guy himself.
Most of the philosophies Ranadive discusses seem more applicable to small companies than large, and I found the book lacking on discussions of the transition from small private company to 20 Billion dollar public company. On the other hand, to those of us who are still trying to form a successful small private company, this gap won't be important for a little while yet. And since successful people rarely want company, maybe it's not coincidence he didn't include that last missing link!

One to have

If there is one book that I, as a professional developer recommend that anyone interested in VB, let alone data-access should have, it is this one. The book is extremely well structured, very readable, packed with examples and above all, a true developer handbook. You'll find what you want in here, from SQL and DAO to ADO and OLE. Great bit on class programming too. I know the new edition is out but sometimes you do not always work on the best platforms as a developer. You need a reference - I've got another 3 or 4 for VB and they do not cut it compared to this. If there is a slight detraction, it is the extensive coverage of 3rd party controls...I seldom bother with CD-demos, they're already out of date. However, as important as the book is Jeff's accessibility, he's never failed to answer an E-mail (except when I mentioned Kenneth Copeland) on a technical query and also runs a good web-site.

I have been coding in ADO .NET with C# for about a year before I picked up this book. My new project is in VB .NET so I saw this book as a chance to brush up on VB .NET syntax. I found the book easy to read and also found many places where I was introduced to new concepts and easier ways of accessing data than I had discovered on my own. I have recommended this book to several people already and will continue to do so.

Accepting Fate is the second book in the Destiny Series.

Accepting Fate begins around the same time frame that Defining Destiny ends. This story however does not revolve around Lucy and Seth, but rather Jax Russo and Derek Alexander. The situations in this story are more complex and mature than Defining Destiny. The character development of Jax and Derek was great, the two characters transitioned into adulthood with relatable issues through the battling of personal demons, developing relationships, as well as helping family members during their times of need.

Jax, best friend to Seth and Lucy, moved home from school about a year ago to help overcome her depression. Unlike Lucy, Jax has not met her soul mate and is unsure if she ever wants to meet her soul mate. Jax sets out to help her brother, Marty, who has been arrested, but in the midst of helping out her brother, Jax is forced to choose between her family and the guy she has loved since she was fifteen.

Derek is a local town hero, with plenty of his own demons. As a firefighter he is battling to overcome his guilt in the horrific tragedy of his sister’s death nine years ago. Derek fights his soul mate connection with Jax, because he doesn’t want to end up broken, like his father. However fate has a different plan, no longer able to resist Jax, will love conquer all?

Overall the story was well written and I would recommend it to those who like romance.

Suviving Isolation of the Heart

This abridged version of Steinbeck's grim novella about a boy's love for his new pony is beautifully packaged by Creative Education, Inc, in 1993. Dedicated to "the continuation of fine literature for readers of all ages" this short book (64 page) presents the story in non chapter format--highlighting Jody's relationship with Gabilan, (the title red pony), his taciturn father, Carl, and the horse-wise ranch hand, Billy Buck. His mother's role is shadowy--gentle but ineffective to relieve his loneliness and unspoken heartache.

Ten-year-old Jody Tiflin receives a wonderful, unexpected gift from his undemonstrative father--a red pony, complete with fancy saddle. His entire world changes now that he has an object on which to lavish care and affection. His goal is to train, break and ride the pony, but an unexpected rainy day results in serious illness for the pony. (One wonders why his mother did nothing to protect the little fellow.) Can clever Billy Buck doctor Gabilan back to health? Set in the stark country around Salinas, CA, this story tugs at the heart, as Jody comes of age late in the year-the year of the red pony. (q.v.) Sober, thought-provoking, no-holds barred storytelling by an American master.
