About the Author
Alastair MacKenzie comes from a military family of long standing and he served as a para-trained platoon commander for 12 months with the New Zealand infantry on combat operations in South Vietnam and in the special forces of South Africa, Oman and the UK, where for four years he was troop commander in the 22nd Special Air Service Regiment. After his retirement as a full-time Army officer he enjoyed a successful commercial career with Royal Ordnance and British Aerospace before moving to consultancy roles. In civilian life he retained an involvement with the Territorial Army as an SAS officer and retired with the rank of Lieutenant Colonel in 2001. He obtained his PhD in Politics in 2005 and is the author of published works including ‘Special Force: The Untold Story of 22nd Special Air Service Regiment (SAS)’ and ‘The Sounds Soldiers’ Memorial – Stories of the Fallen’.

About the Author
Dr. James (Jim) Burson, creator of Solution-Based Basketball®, is known as a "coach's coach" (Sports Illustrated) for his lifetime commitment to the game. He is a consultant to basketball coaches and to sports companies, a popular motivational speaker, former president of the National Association of Basketball Coaches and a member of the Ohio Basketball Hall of Fame. He taught and coached for over 40 years at the university level and is the author of The Daily Nugget: Motivations for Basketball Coaches and Everyone Who Loves the Game.

Basketball mom says "winning coaching"

It is clear that Jim Burson knows a great deal about basketball and about motivating people. My son played high school basketball while I read this book and the book helped me to be a more understanding parent. I think I gained empathy for the complex plight of a coach as well as players, and I certainly saw myself in some of the mothers the author describes throughout the story. It helped me to realize that every coach is on a journey of their own and that, while I may want them to be perfectly together for my son, we all are learning as we go. The Golden Whistle made me want to be a better mother, not just a better basketball mom. For me, that felt like winning coaching.

The education of the heart is the heart of education

I have spent a coaching lifetime in southern Ohio and have grown professionally watching Coach Burson's Muskingum College teams, listening to him at coaching clinics, observing his practices and seeking his counsel for over 40 years. I anxiously awaited the release of this book, and have not been disappointed. Dr. Burson's story, uniquely written, presents deep questions of beginning and experienced coaches alike in the formation of core values that will maximize a coach's influence on student-athletes. However, this book cuts to the heart issues of a coach, challenges him to see and do the right things for the right reasons, and grow personally as well as professionally from the experience of truly pursuing excellence. In a "style over substance" culture, this book has weighty subject matter for thought and reflection. I always recommend three "must read" books to basketball coaches serious about the profession: "They Call Me Coach" by John Wooden, "A Season With Dick Bennett" by Eric Ferris, and "The Score Takes Care of Itself" by Bill Walsh. This book must be added to the list. "The Golden Whistle" is a gift to the coaching profession.

Deeper than you might expect, more than just basketball.

I'm not a book reader, mostly because I don't have time, so any book I read has to have at least one takeaway thought that sticks with me for a while and goes beyond what I would have expected from the book. This book certainly has it from first-time author Jim Burson. If you are a Basketball coach - I think it's a must read. If you a sports coach - it's a must read. But I think if you look past the fact this has a basketball/sports theme, this book has some great nuggets that will make you think about the way that you prepare to teach and to be taught throughout life.

The book is based on fictional characters and tells the story of basketball knowledge being passed from a legendary coach entering retirement to his successor, a bright young apprentice who has encountered struggles early in his career. I suspect many of the experiences, characters, and lessons are based on real people or knowledge from the Author. The set up was well done and the story moves efficiently into the heart and purpose of the book. There are a number of great takeaways that I will leave for the reader, but by far the theme that stuck with me as I finished the book was how to prepare your own life so that you can always be ready to accept knowledge from others, adapt it so that it becomes your own unique knowledge, and then share it to others when they are ready to be coached. There is an emphasis in the story about creating your own unique plan by using the knowledge of others, and those that do this effectively will experience the greatest success in life.

This may sound a bit deep for a book about basketball, but I suspect the message was not designed to be limited to the game. Of course, there are a number of great, basketball specific philosophical coaching ideas to chew on, and so the book is worth the read to get at those nuggets. But by far the highest level takeaway goes beyond the game and brings the reader to a satisfying end that transcends basketball.

For a first-time author, Dr. Burson did an amazing job. There were a few times in the book that became too basketball specific, but those were easily skimmed to get back to the theme that grabbed my focus. For the price, reading efficiency, and for providing that takeaway value you want from any book, this delivers.

John Carder Bush is a respected photographer and writer. His sister is the composer and musician Kate Bush, and John's poetry narration and backing vocals have been used on several of her albums. He headed the Kate Bush management team for twenty years and since her early childhood, and throughout her career, John has photographed Kate both candidly and professionally. His images have appeared on iconic album, single and magazine covers worldwide.

Beautiful Book!

I received this as a Christmas gift from my wife. It is a fantastic book with some absolutely stunning photos, most I have never seen before. My favorite photo is a full page shot of her wearing no make up with the two dogs from the Hounds of Love photo session. My only complaint is some of the photos are fairly small on the page, leaving a lot of white space.

Fans will love it.

Currently there are no reviews of this book, so I'm just going to share a few brief details that may encourage other interested fans who are unsure about this purchase.

If you're reading this I'm going to assume you're already familiar with "Cathy" -- I think Cathy was released when I was in high school & just discovering the music of Kate Bush. I certainly couldn't afford it then, and I can hardly justify buying a first printing of it now. Luckily, it was reprinted last year, so fans were finally able to afford -- well, what amounts to the Holy Grail as far as Kate collectibles go. This book serves as a continuation of the first -- only much more monumental material-wise.

I wasn't too sure what to expect from this book -- I suspected more commentary on Kate's career and possibly her concert last year. But this book is largely photos, most of which (probably 70-80%) I have never seen before. Maybe I'm not as thorough as some fans, but there was A LOT of new material here for me to marvel over. Kate's brother was obviously on set for most of the video shoots, and there are plenty of album cover test shots as well. Some of my favorite pictures in this book are the test shoots for the Hounds Of Love album cover -- I couldn't help but smile.

John Carder Bush does offer some commentary here and there, but it's not per photo as it is with "Cathy". As usual, his insights are delightful.

If there's anything for me to complain about here, it's the binding. It seems loose -- although it's entirely possible that it's loose to make it easy to open & lay flat. So -- no reason to knock off a star. The book is very well constructed, although it does not come shrink-wrapped and may get scuffed during shipping.

"Kate" is well worth the asking price for fans.

About the Author

Benjamin H. Bratton is a theorist whose work spans philosophy, computer science, and design. He is Associate Professor of Visual Arts and Director of the Center for Design and Geopolitics at the University of California, San Diego. He is also Visiting Professor of Critical Studies at SCI-Arc (the Southern California Institute of Architecture) and Professor of Digital Design at the European Graduate School in Saas-Fee, Switzerland.

The Stack: the map is the territory.

Nobody designed the Stack.

It had no name, not until this book.

Whether it exists is in question.

But the oversized role the Stack plays in our lives is plain to see, and the consequences of this ongoing accident is at once inspiring and hair-raising.

If that sounds compelling, then Ben Bratton’s highly entertaining, densely packed tour de force of design thinking, social theory, architectural criticism, software studies, historiography might be for you.

But what exactly is the Stack? How did it get here? And what do we do with it now that we know about it?

The Stack is our planetary system of systems, fleshy and rocky, sleek and ethereal, which permits us to think and build.

It's an “accidental megastructure” that cultivates equilibrium and emergence.

Its multi-layered cybernetic landscape is every bit as powerful and consequential as other planetary systems such as climate.

It begets novel, porous, user-centered political jurisdictions that are already upending relations among states and also between states and their citizen/users.

The Stack is mostly geologic and biologic in nature, and while we humans created several of the Stack’s components and capabilities, nobody is anyone in charge of its uses, reach, and fate. Not yet at any rate.

The Stack: a floor polish and a desert topping!

Consciously and not, we have set the Stack in motion and it reciprocates by providing us (individuals and organizations political or otherwise) with power and pleasure, convenience and assurance. The forms and functions of the Stack are scarcely comprehensible. We are ignorant of its truths (if it has any) as much as we are of blind to its consequences (which include, among other things, our future as a species.)

The Stack can be used by you and the Stack can make use of you, which is why Stack Anxiety is inevitable.

The frequently elaborate, nonplanned, and cryptic qualities of this in/animate, anthro/geopogenic cellular/planetary cyborg-esque multi-instrumentalist configuration that Bratton calls the Stack has needed someone like him to come along and name the whole and describe its parts. With this book, Bratton makes possible (and so, now, necessary) for us to address the profound and protean implications of our reliance upon, and responsibilities for, the Stack... all notwithstanding (and because of) the intrinsic final unknowability of The Stack itself.

The Stack doesn't know that the Stack exists, much less what it is. So given our utter reliance on the Stack, how can we expect to know it? How much knowledge of the Stack is required to subject the Stack to design? Or is the Stack no more subject to design than a hurricane is subject to our science and prayers? We buy sand bags, we duck and cover, we sweep up after, but it's hubris to think these forces are subject to control, a fool's errand that ends in ignorance or tears.

Is you is/Is you ain't my baby?

This is a fun book. Ben Bratton’s writing is agile, insightful, and clarifying. It's also eloquent (sometimes in the mind-bending way Cirque de Soleil is eloquent) and humorous (coming in both waggish and wet varieties). It’s deeply erudite while also incredibly helpful as a means of understanding the current political/technical landscape and what we can do with it to cultivate a more livable planet. While Bratton's main project is to explore matters of sovereignty (political and personal) he's equally attuned to the Earth layer of the Stack from which the Stack itself draws life force to feed its hungers… which are our own hungers... which may just wind up being our undoing.

NOTE: This book is thick and heavy literally and figuratively. I bought the hardbound edition, which is luxurious. But other readers may choose to get themselves a digital version that won’t bury them alive. Using Brattonspeak, here are some instructions: The User engages the Stack itself by activating an Interface at a convenient Address wherever they be in the City… then download the book from the Cloud, which is on, sometimes below, but always of the Earth.

I have only read half of the first chapter. The subject matter is very important, but the book is quite dense and difficult reading. I will update as I get further in.
