About the Author

A passionate owner of dogs, who dedicated herself to researching and learning about them for over 45 years. For the past 35 years she concentrated on resolving aggression issues and finding the reasons for their behavioural problems. Only after having a great deal of success in the rehabilitation of red zone dogs and solving the many problems of pet owners has she devised and written this book. Her work continues in the training of younger people so that her training methods will become widespread and put a stop to dogs being a nuisance and becoming dangerous.

Inside the dog

Primal Plus is a nice step toward the thinking one needs to possess when living with a dog. If we are to be honest with helping a dog, we must first consider their perspective and stop thinking for them. I think Ms. Neal did well to get these ideas together. It's not easy.Perhaps with more editing the flow of information will become stronger. One thing did stand out: The information briefly mentioned regarding quality sleep and its affect on behavior. A nervous dog has poor sleep. They end up crashing. A dog owner might do well to read this book and consider the dog's perspective toward improving the relationship.

James Fieser is a Professor of Philosophy at the University of Tennessee at Martin. He received his B.A. from Berea College, and his M.A. and Ph.D. in Philosophy from Purdue University. He is author, co-author or editor of ten textbooks, including Philosophy: A Historical Survey with Essential Readings (9/e 2014), Scriptures of the World's Religions (5/e 2014), Ethics: Discovering Right and Wrong (7/e 2012), Business Ethics and the Bottom Line (2012), A Historical Introduction to Philosophy (2003), and Moral Philosophy through the Ages (2001). He has edited and annotated the ten-volume Early Responses to Hume (2/e 2005) and the five-volume Scottish Common Sense Philosophy (2000). The Sheriff and His Partner: a hot item at a real cool price.

The Sheriff and His Partner (TS&HP), written by Frank Harris and dated 4 April, 1891, must have started life as a dime novel or as content in some other pulp-fiction venue. Because it is such a short story, it seems odd to me that TS&HP is still treated as a standalone book, a giveaway from either Project Gutenberg or Amazon's Kindle Store.

The Kindle version is just 42 tiny screens, end-to-end. My beloved WordPerfect© counts some 140 words per Kindle screen and 4,161 words overall. The longest sentence in the story is 17 words. The Flesch-Kincaid index rates the story at 3rd grade reading level. (Parents should note that the low rating doesn’t mean TS&HP is kiddie lit. By comparison, Flesch-Kincaid rates Hemingway's fiction at 4th grade level.) In plain English, I’ll say that The Sheriff and His Partner is a bullet-quick read for adults who, having read the story themselves, might not want kiddies to read it at all because the denouement is pretty grizzly.

TS&HP is a bildungsroman, set in the year 1869 on the Kansas frontier. The narrator claims to be Frank Harris in his silly, unfledged youth. He reads law and clerks for a judge named Locock. Their office is in the town of Kiota, Kansas.

The plot is childishly simple: A bad-news pistolero named Tom Williams has a personal beef with Elwood County Sheriff Samuel Johnson, who is also a bad-news pistolero and whose office is in Kiota. Local gossip says that Williams and Johnson were partners in bygone days, somewhere back in Missouri. Partners in what, precisely, is unclear and is therefore moot.

Outlaw Williams is holed up in the town of Osawatomie, ten miles west of Kiota, and is wanted for numerous crimes. His latest offense was to waylay and rob at gunpoint a former, Elwood County judge named Shannon.

Every man in Kiota knows Sheriff Johnson will go to Osawatomie to arrest or kill (as may be) Tom Williams. Sheriff Johnson is popular with folks in Kiota but, gunslinger Williams being who and what he is, nobody in Kiota is certain that Johnson will survive the encounter. Accordingly, Sheriff Johnson and the men of Kiota have a confab in the saloon to figure out who and how many will go with the sheriff to see justice done.

At the confab, whiskey shooters are shot. The talk is terse and serious. Suddenly, in the middle of it all, the law student / narrator appears. A lippy little squirt mistaking himself for a man, Narrator has some opinions and is anxious to impress other men with his good sense. He listens to the talk for a few moments before he lets the crowd know that he doesn't understand why Sheriff Johnson will not man up and do the job personally, by himself. After all, that's what the sheriff gets paid for. Why then should Sheriff Johnson ask others to risk their lives for free?

Narrator then adds offhandedly: "I think it would be cowardly to take two or three against a single man. I said one should go, and I say so still."

Sheriff Johnson gets in Narrator's face and sneers: "Do you? I guess you'd go alone, wouldn't you? to bring Williams in?"

Coolly, Narrator retorts: "If I were paid for it I should."

As the mouthy youngster spoke, Sheriff Johnson's face went white with anger. So angry was Johnson that the law student raised his hands to defend himself, thinking the sheriff was set to reply with his fists.

So immature is Narrator that he cannot understand why everyone in the room is suddenly angry and disgusted with him. Next morning at the law office, he learns that he was taken at his word. Narrator is working at his desk when Sheriff Johnson walks in, hands him a badge and a gun, swears him in as a deputy, orders his new deputy to go to Osawatomie, arrest Tom Williams and bring him back. Then he pays his new deputy, in advance, a handsome fee of $5.25 to do the job. For Narrator's convenience, a horse and buggy wait outside in the street.

Narrator hesitates for a moment before he grasps what's actually happening. Then he understands: he doesn't really have to go after Williams but, because he stuck his trigger finger in his mouth last night, if he doesn't go he will forfeit the respect of every man in Kiota – all of whom are standing around waiting to see what he will do. A fool but no coward, he climbs into the buggy, points the horse at Osawatomie and settles in for the ride. As he rides, he ponders his situation further.

Halfway to Osawatomie, Narrator has an epiphany. There are two paragraphs at this point. In those two paragraphs, Narrator reasons his way through how and why he got into such a mess and what he must now do to get out of it. Readers, of course, are privy to Narrator's thoughts and we thereby arrive at a full, manly understanding of the white male's nineteenth-century, frontier ethos. The Sheriff and His Partner may be pulp fiction, but that two-paragraph passage is a wonderful read.

Events in Osawatomie are anticlimactic and comedic. Having had his epiphany, Narrator now believes he is a man. Too bad his bravado still makes him foolish. He walks into the Osawatomie saloon, pulls a revolver on Williams and tells the gunman he's under arrest. Williams must go to Kiota and face justice.

Narrator's life is saved because Williams, jealous of his fierce reputation, doesn't want it put about that he was so petty mean as to shoot and kill a lippy, punk-ass law student. Williams will not surrender his weapon but sincerely promises not to shoot the 'deputy sheriff.' Instead, the outlaw makes a generous offer. He will get in the buggy and ride with the deputy back to Kiota, there to meet the sheriff. Williams does so because he wants to shoot Sheriff Johnson – his former partner now his sworn enemy – and sees this botched arrest as a good chance to get Sheriff Johnson in front of his gun.

The upshot is that Narrator and Williams arrive in Kiota. There ensues a showdown in which everything gets settled most ricky tick. This writer won't tell who gets killed or how many. Those who want to know how TS&HP plays out will have to get a copy and read it for themselves.

About the Author
Haroon Ahmed is Emeritus Professor of microelectronics at Cambridge University and former Master of Corpus Christi College. He was a student at King's College and he has been a member of the Engineering Department and The Cavendish Laboratory. He is now Visiting Professor at the Computer Laboratory.

Philip Denbigh was a student at Gonville and Caius College. His career has been in engineering, mostly in academia as lecturer, professor and reader at the Universities of Birmingham, Cape Town and Sussex. He retired early and acquired a degree in fine art in 2005. His meticulous work in coloring the engravings of this collection has produced prints that are artistically pleasing while remaining in sympathy with the period.

A lovely book to have but the quality of the reproduction of the engravings leaves something to be desired, especially when opne compares them with the reproductions done by Heffer & Sons, the Cambridge booksellers, from Ackermann's Cambridge done some thirty years or more ago.

Wonderful Storytelling

Published by Dalang Publishing earlier this month, I was intrigued by its synopsis. I am often captivated by foreign authors whose stories are set in war time backgrounds. In Potions and Paper Cranes Indonesian author Lan Fang has captured what it was like being a woman in Indonesia (formally The Dutch East Indies) during the Japanese occupation at the end of WWII and the early days of Indonesia's revolution. What’s truly remarkable is that while Lan Fang was born in 1970, she wrote the story as if she lived it.

Most often war novels are about soldiers; only a few books focus on civilians and particularly women. Though the background is set in Indonesia, the story is universal; it tells the emotional and physical struggle of victims of war.

Lan Fang has a remarkable talent in weaving intriguing characters, historical facts, cultural nuances, family dynamics and human nature into a masterpiece of storytelling. From the first few pages one is drawn toward the vivid personalities and their most unusual relationships.

In her short life Lan Fang produced several novels and short stories. Her work is just now reaching western bibliophiles. Potions and Paper Cranes is a joy to read and a great book to become familiar with this wonderful Indonesian writer.

A Richly complex tapestry of survival and love during the Japanese occupation of Indonesia

Passion, history, culture and class distinction clash in this brave novel by Lan Fang. This story of 2 very different women is masterfully woven together with the political events in Indonesia at the end of WW II.

Potions and Paper Cranes

My nose for World War II lit led me to Lan Fang's Potions and Paper Cranes, but my appreciation for the novel has nothing to with global events of the period. Shocking as it sounds, it was Fang's depiction of individual experiences that captured my imagination.

The main story shifts points of view between Sulis, Sujono and Matsumi, something I liked as the role of each character alters with each narrative voice. It is an approach few could manage, but I felt Fang handled it beautifully. Another thing I liked was contrast in Fang's approach to Chinese, Indonesian and Japanese culture and how those influences might have interacted during the uncertainty brought on by the larger conflict.

A deeply intuitive tale, Potions and Paper Cranes is a naked assessment of human nature, a haunting narrative that touches something in the reader's soul and shakes them to the core.

Great for non-native speakers

This book was used in one of my intense Korean classes. I had been looking for a good Korean grammar book (as anyone who has studied Korean knows that the grammar can be a bit ridiculous and one tiny phrase can change the ENTIRE meaning of a sentence), and I was thrilled when I found this one. There is an index of expressions for easy location if you're looking for something specific, and enough examples listed to make it fairly easy to understand. Unlike some language books that are...well, obviously not written by native English speakers, this book uses proper English to express the concepts. It's great, and a must-have for any (I'd say intermediate) Korean learner that's looking for a grammar book. Warning: this does not have romanization, so if you can't read Hangul, then this may not be for you--try it when you get to the point where you can easily read Korean. I personally can't stand romanization because I find it impossible to read, so this works out well for me!

Great Reference as long as you...

Make sure that you are only buying this book to be used as a reference. It is not a textbook, but it does clear up several ambiguities about similar Korean grammar points. This book is often used in conjunction with university level textbooks and I recommend it to anyone who needs a good Korean grammar reference.

absolurely amaing!!!!

This is by far the best korean grammar i have seen since i began studying korean. It has plenty of examples to show the ways in which each grammar rules and endings can be used. It also explains them without using highly technical language and is therefore easy to understand. I highly recommend this book for anyone who wants to learn how to speak the korean language.

if better understood, can indicate good or bad health

This is an informative and entertaining book. Dr. Chen introduces children to a body function that is important to know about and one that, if better understood, can indicate good or bad health. So often children (and adults, too) laugh or are embarrassed by the subject. Using rhyming verse and with humorous illustrations 'What Your Pooh Says About You' explains the mysteries surrounding 'pooh'. It's a great book for kids and should be in every doctor's office!
